I agree with tigerfan! My friend bought a cheap S&W Sigma series 40 cal. We all hated it, but another friend loved it....and shot nothing but bullseyes with it. Just depends on what you like.....;)

It is a good thing to have choices.
The .22 in your pocket is better than the .45 in your desk.

That was what I was sort of hinting at. Try things out. Hold it, shoot it, just don't buy because everyone else did. Yeah I get a little testy about glocks and ipods. Hence the comparo. The entire grip isn't bad. Just the bottom of the backstrap digs into my palm and the grip angle is a little off. But that's just me. Actually, I like the Walther P99 better than anything but just don't trust them being S&W now. Smith makes good wheel guns, but auto's? no thanks.

This thread is "basic, reliable". Don't get me wrong as I own several Sigs and love 'em but come on a plain nitron finish P229 with standard sights is well over $650 dealer cost compared to $450 for a Glock, XD, or M&P. Add about $100 to that for someone being new to firearms and paying retail. $800 with tax is a little steep for a starter gun don't you think.

^^^^^^Try a new S&W, M&P in your hand. If you don't like the fit change it. It has 3 different backstraps. Mine is very accurate and hasn't malfunctioned yet. I like the grip angle compared to the Glock but last time at the range I had better times and hits with the Glock?

    Will,
I'm not real framiliar with the cougers but don't believe they are even being produced anymore. Rotating barrel lock-up correct? Anyway being a limited edition gun I wouldn't shoot it at all. Just set it back and let it appreciate in value. Shoot the hell out of the Charter. ;)

I prefer Sigs or Kahrs to carry... But a good .357 revolver packs a mighty punch!

I've heard great stories about the Glock 33. It's a .357 sig with a 3.5 inch barrell. The gun store up here sells out everytime they get a new shipment. I've been on the list for over a year and I'm still waiting. I'm more a fan of the semi-auto's rather than a revolver. I think it's an experience thing. Have much more with the semi over the revolver.

Just sold my XD .40. No problems with it but didn't like the magazine capacity. Friend of mine swears by his. Cleaning is simple too.

.357 is my gun of choice. I highly recommend the Smith and Wesson Model 686+. As mentioned before it can hold an extra round. I pray I never have to use it but its good to know I have something instead of nothing.

Go to a shootin range and shoot the same caliber but different barrell lengths. My personal opinion is the 6" barell because its still somewhat small but more balanced than a shortie.

I own a ported glock .357 sig and I love it. Period. =)

As far as the magazines go, I keep em filled up 24/7. The springs come EXTRA stiff with these to begin with, so i'm actually hoping for them to loosen up a little. You can barely get the 9th, 10th round in!
