That series still has lingering affects. It was the most talked about melt-down to MAF. And like you said Coutorier hounded Geno, Hartnell and Giroux caused a bunch of problems for Sid in that series. But it was the Pens own fault for playing into Philly's game plan.

However, as much as people always say Pens get away with murder, I just don't see it. You will rarely see a player take as much abuse as Sid or Geno. Look at last night, beginning of the game, late, high hit to Sid's head. Total BS, no call. Then whoever was on top of him for what seemed like an eternity, even after the play leaves the zone. Methot going WWE with the eye-gauge. I mean come on. So it just blows my mind when people say Pens whine and whatnot. But hey, all you Edmonton and Toronto fans will have your fair share of it in the coming years, with your young studs. It's a joke that thuggery can be defended over skill, but just my opinion.

 

Was that the series where people were spearing each other left and right and there was a fight damn near evrey faceoff? I know i exagerated a bit, but that series was nuts if its the one i am thinking of.

 

And Hornquist not there in the slot hurts too.

As long as pens don't give up a 5 on 3 they at least don't have to worry about power play goals.

 

Thats what evrey team does to evrey star player, at evrey level especially one that is injury prone. Right or wrong, its what happens.

The pens do whine and dive a ton.

 

You are right to a degree but that is a very general statement. Sure, you are going to be hard on the star player and try to take away space etc. But give me some examples of Karlsson having to deal with anything other than less time to skate and getting every check against him finished. The Pens are doing their best to take him out of the game but I didn't see much in the way of goonery. What did they do to Ovi, aside from put a body on him when he tried to set up for a 1-timer and also finish checks on him. But Sid is getting cross-checked in the head. I realize it happens, but if you don't think those 2 guys take more punishment than your average star player, then you are either blind or in denial. And McDavid is next, along with Matthews.

 

My guess is you are looking at it with a biased view, we all do.

Or sidney is a shit talker, thus more cross checks to the head. When i used to play, there were players you went hard on that took it, and the ones you went hard on that cried like a bitch either to you or the ref. The latter usually got it even harder the next time because you knew you were getting inside their head.

I realize that I am biased, to a degree. And I am literally watching every game these guys play, every year, so of course I am noting it. I just think those 2 play through ridiculous abuse, compared to a lot of other stars. I mean ya, a guy like Kesler does that to every top star, so whoever he was matched against was getting the business, all series. But night after night, Sid plays through a lot. I don't think it really gets him off of his game. He for sure works the refs, but he also has the 'C'. Geno on the other hand, just goes back at a player.

I think McDavid handled Kesler appropriately, as did Johansson (debatable with his media comments though). But I just think the cheap shots on the stars gets glorified sometimes. I love tight-checking on a star, or seeing teams attempt to shut them down, but there is obviously a line.

But ya I totally agree with what you are saying, as a general rule. And I have had similar experience / opinion with playing.

 

Bring some substance to the arguement or it's just meaningless nonsense. At least slander made some valid points to debate with.

Get rid of the instigator rule in playoff games. You won't see players taking liberties with stars anymore come playoff time then.

 

This. Almost why fighting should never be eliminated in the game because it will only make it more dangerous. If i know that im going to potentially get my ass beat down for cross checking the star player behind the play, I would think twice. That self policing aspect of the game is one that i love.

Sidney should be crying to his team mates for not stomping the ass of people hitting him high.... or maybe even they cant stand him LOL!!!

 

I think it is more the roster. I think the other night JR said he thought Geno was the toughest guy on our squad. Tough to protect the stars when he is your toughest guy lol.

 

I think it's more the pens are focused on having skilled players rather than people that are only there for hits...it's why Sestito hasn't played for them in months.

 

Im a hawks fan (not bandwagon, since birth...) and they have had the same problem up until the recent couple of seasons. Tons of skill, no physicality so the stars tended to get pounded on pretty good.


Half the time they deserved it LOL!!!

 

This is why people can't stand Pittsburgh fans across the board. Terrible winners and absolutely full of excuses when the lose. Go Sens, and ultimately go Preds!
