Is there any rationale for why a stock air filter would be in a K&N air box? I changed out the air filter on the fiance's Subie today and it has K&N stickers on the air box but a stock filter inside. I'm 99% sure it wasn't the reusable kind as it looked the same as the MicroGuard one I bought, although I haven't ever seen one of the K&N ones in person...

Thanks guys, I was bummed when I saw the K&N anyway so I was stoked that it wasn't a K&N filter, just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to hurt anything by sticking with the stock filter in the K&N housing. Probably a stupid question but I'd rather be safe than sorry... Don't know what I'd do without y'all!

You can duplicate a K&N without buying one.

Just punch some holes in a regular filter and lightly coat your MAF with oil.

the oil on your MAF comes from the lack of a oil catch can due to a shitty PCV valve design. Lots of guys with paper filters and oil clogged mafs and intake tubes. Can't blame the filter for what enters the system behind it.

What do you mean K&N housing?

If it had a stock filter in it, sounds like a factory airbox that someone put a K&N sticker on. The cold air (cold water) intakes use entirely different filters.

Need to pour some water and dirt down the intake too.

over 140,000 miles on my K&N, never had any of those problems, oil is clean on the stick.
I've run them in every vehicle I own and none have ever burned oil. But you guys go ahead and keep buying those restrictive single use filters.

and by all means cut a big hole in your airbox while you're at it,, you know, for better air flow with that restrictive paper filter.... and then screw a cover back over it because it let water in during a rain storm while you drove down your neighborhood street.

Well, that could very well be the case... It has a sticker that says "K&N filter won't void your warranty" so that seemed like a strange one to put on after the fact, but I suppose anything is possible

    Edit: here's a pic

I laugh a little every time I read someone do the deckplate mod claiming they got a noticeable increase in power.

Oh, and my WRX came with a drop-in K&N, I took it out a put a paper filter in. :p

It's just stickers on a stock air box.

A small handful of select mods.
Get an AEM washable filter. Fits in the stock box and you can clean it with dish soap.
