    WHAT..?? sorry ...DO NOT UNDERSTAND...
If thew injectors cut off when I'm in gear, I don't think I'd be going anywhere...??
When I put it in neutral, the RPM drops to idle and burns less fuel than being up AT 2500 RPM.... and with the tranny downshifting the RPM goes higher..= more gas.

As has been said several times....

If you're in gear, and not using the engine to maintain a speed, say going downhill, the injectors aren't firing.

The motor is still turning, hence the RPMs on you tach, but the motor is just acting as an air pump/brake at that point.

If you're in neutral, than the injectors are firing to keep the motor idling.

I'm about the same, my guage usually says I have 365 til empty. At 18miles left the light comes on and I fill up and put almost exactly 18 gallons in.

I usually get 415 on my screen but it does go down to 385 once in a while. Since I'm in California, I just chalk it up to the weather and science doing stuff in the tank.

Is my truck dumber than yours?

Highest I've seen mine is 385. My last 5 tanks have averaged 491. My last 9 were all over 438.

    Is yours 4WD?

The screen always says 385 when you fill up. Go slow on the highway right after getting gas and it will start to climb

    Check my fuelly link

After I fill up, it goes down exactly 1 mile for every 2 miles I drive (until it gets reasonable)... As far as I know mine NEVER goes up. Is it a '16 v '17 thing?

What exactly does "slow on the highway" mean?

Rolled into the gas station today just as the gas light came on (24 miles left). I got 275 miles out of that tank (Last fill up was 15.660 gallons). Filled up 17.454 gallons. Every time I fill up it always says 385 miles left. 4x4 with 285/70/17 tires.

those are amazing miles on a tank. Based on your fuelly 22.7 mpgs, and 21 gallons in the tank you would get 476.7 miles on a tank. to get the 491 miles are you running it till its dry? Or have you changed tires or something like that?

100% stock OR 4WD A/T (with bed cover)

It's a few things. First, I have been getting ~24 (about half my trucks miles are from a vacation). I fill it pretty full... I think the pump I have been using fills it fuller than any other I have used... and I am rarely more than 10 miles from that pump; so, I let it get close to 0 miles to go. Last tank was 513 @ 24.4 on 87 E10.

I do try to drive efficiently and I'm usually not in a rush. This engine is impressive at low output; but, this truck is a brick over 60 mph. The reason full size trucks get nearly the same highway mpg is that it takes very nearly the same force to push them at high speed (from EPA ABC coefficients). Those Ford and Chevy air dams are LOW and Chevy even has 'air dams' in front of the rear wheels. I'm sure the reason mudflaps are optional is solely to do with drag not $$.

The Tacoma V6 engine is very inefficient. 270hp? I think the raptor gets similar mileage right? It has a lot more power than 270HP.

I used to drive an MR2 turbo, and I never had the a near quarter of the gas tank disappear from a 10 mile round trip to the gym. I am driving like a straight grandma too with my third gen. I don't know what Toyota was thinking with this power train.

I hear that mileage will get better after 1200 miles because the onboard computers need to slowly learn my driving habits, but I have a hard time believing that.

55 on a highway. Mine will climb to 400 or so and then drop based on miles after that. It assumes a gas mileage when you fill up and then starts calculating it

    Best so far:

That was on 19.629 gallons and I drove about 20 miles after DTE hit zero.

513/24.4=21.01gals, which would be a dry tank.

At 24.4mpg, you'd have to drive nearly 70 miles after DTE hit 0 to run the tank that low.
