Adding Rear sway bar

often used to reduce rear sway, in fact.

 

I can understand for full size trucks that tow heavy weight but our tacos? The sway bar is to prevent sway of load in turns but their is no weight in a rear of a truck. Trailers are mounted at the hitch so their isn't much moment with the conferable load capacity of a Tacoma. All I can see is a stiffer rear end which is bad already for a truck unloaded and less wheel articulation. I can understand a stiffer front sway bar since that is where you will notice it into a turn slowing down the CG shifting forwards but the rear will never see the CG shift under acceleration into a turn because this is a truck not a racecar.

Therefore my conclusion of a rear sway bar for a tacoma would be if you like to do a lot of donuts.

 

well, ok then. don't get a rear bar until you decide to do the donuts I'm guessin.

 

Yeah, we stiffen the rear to induce oversteer or turn in on our race cars. Makes the rear too skittish at highway speeds for not having any weight over the rear axles on these trucks.

Anyone find anything besides those 3 (sos, hell wig, and addco)? or a recommendation on which is better ? Anyone do an upgrade to their front sway bar?

 

I've got the Hellwig rear sway bar on my '16 and it bolts on to the frame, but you have to drill the hole. I had one on my 2nd gen as well and it u-bolted to the frame, no drilling.

 

You got me thinking about it now that I have the Hellwig rear bar,

 

what exactly are you looking for? i have the Hellwig and it's a perfect solution and has 3 mount points for adjustability. is there something missing for you?

 

Sway bars reduce flex. People tend to take off their front swaybars for more flex on their off road trucks.

Makes sense for TRD Sports though.

 

I have no place where I am to really go off roading, the closest i'd get would be a dirt road here or there, nothing that would be an issue if I put a sway bar on, Just looking to get whichever makes the most difference (thickest) for the best price.

 

as far as i can find the only rear bar available for a 3rd gen is the Hellwig. the others are either not compatible, like the X Runner bar, or are listed as front bars. thick rear bars are not available for a reason. if you are simply going as thick as possible then your option appears to be the Hellwig mounted in the stiff position of three. my Hellwig is set to the medium mount position and i love it. but it's all about the total package with suspension as usual.

 

Exactly, I thought from what i've seen the rear is interchangeable with 2nd gen and the front isn't, so i'll probably just end up getting
the hellwig.

 

installed today. took about 2 hours because I've never done it before and wanted to measure two hundred times and drill hole in frame once. It was easy, and I think realistically, if you've done more than one, you can probably install in 20 minutes.

 

Who makes that one? and what are your first impressions ?

what info are you seeking exactly? it helps reduce rear sway. it works. i can say more about it if you have a particular question.

 

Little difference, big difference, worth the money, waste of money? Only had sway bars on cars but never a truck. Just interested how much it helps having something that sits that high and weighs that much. Thanks in advance.

 

yeah, sorry for being a little evasive, but y'know with suspension stuff it's the package always, never the part. so i'm commenting here on how it works with my package, which is the bigger effect than just adding a bar. because my package is based on soft suspension (Pro Fox) and stiff tires (ST Maxx Load E 265/65-17, very hard tires). with this setup the rear bar is great, because roll is high on the Fox suspension. but with hard tires, too little roll/weight shift lead to poor traction, which can show easily on a wet road with these tires. so for the Hellwig, or any properly installed rear bar, i think it's totally great IF you have a somewhat soft suspension AND you spend most of your time on road (or more specifically you don't often need full suspension travel for off road).

if you have a firm suspension like the Sport model, then it's arguable if you'd like the rear bar. speaking for myself, it's perfect.

i also have sumo springs, and the Hellwig is mounted in the medium hole between soft and firm settings. the firm setting is too much for me. the soft setting helped but i'm on the highway a lot and it wasn't enough

 

This is a Hellwig bar.
It's only been one commute to work and back. Initially, I can feel some improvement in body roll. I'm going to have to play with it a bit before I can give good feedback. I already want to move to the medium setting to experience that as well. I'll post back once I can provide solid feedback.
