Yeah, if any amount of drone discourages you, you made the right choice not to get the MBRP. Given another year or so I can see a few more exhaust options becoming available.

Unless you know something specific, I think the Gen-2's have been out long enough that all the options are on the table at this point.

Truly a good point, but the thing I know that you don't is that the vehicles in question are the Gen-3's. :]

MBRP exhausts have gotten the same noise reviews with Gen 2's as well.

Let me rephrase this for clarity:
"Given another year or so I can see a few more exhaust options by companies other than MBRP for the Gen-3 Tacomas.

Thread is in the exhaust section, and OP has a 2nd gen.... So I'd assume the vehicles in question would be 2nd gens? Unless youre asking about 3rd gens?

Gotcha - I see where the confusion is coming from now! Totally didn't recognize I was responding to an owner of a 2nd gen...

I had the MBRP S5338409 exhaust put in a few days ago and I am experiencing odd behavior and I am 75% sure I am not going crazy. My ride home from my friends garage was dissapointing, it was way louder than I expected and it seemed a lot louder than a friend of mine who has the same exhaust on a 2017. The weird thing is i asked him to go for a ride to hear it and compare it to his and it sounded much quieter. Over that last few days, I find it to be loud and Honda Civic-ish but on some days, it sounds ok. I am talking apples to apples, meaning windows open or down and highway to backroad. It doesn't appear to be leaking air, checked twice. Anyone else experiencing this weirdness?

Anywho, I spoke with MBRP about the loudness and they convinced me to buy a new muffler, which is arriving soon. It is supposed to be quieter and have more of an "earthy" tone. Still supposed to be louder than stock. I will report back on the difference as well as the part number for the new muffler in case anyone is in the same boat. They gave me a great deal! $100 including shippin. I had to show proof of purchase for the S533809

I am interested to hear how that new muffler works out. I would like to get the "offroad" turn down exhaust under the truck if i can get it with a muffler thats not going to sound like a cht box.

Interested in the results. I have the MBRP cat back system, I got it bundled with the volant intake. I've since removed all the cats and it rasps like a mofo over 2700rpm. I figured that would happen and have been looking for a solution that doesn't require putting cats back in. I lost most of my low end grunt, but once I hit 2700rpm VVTI seems to kick in advancing timing and it really roars to life.

Did you happen to check for any loose bolts or faulty gaskets along the exhaust system? Or has it thrown a CEL for the O2 sensors indicating an exhaust leak? Easiest time to notice is first start in the morning. Start the truck and crawl under it. If you see condensation escaping anywhere along the exhaust try to ensure to tubing is tight and not cocked one way or the other. Mine got really loud about 2wks after install and I quickly realized the crush/donut gasket from the collector at y pipe and the cat back system had not seated right when I installed it. I got a new gasket and it's been fine ever since.

I realize I'm guessing about oranges(3rd gen) when I have apples (2nd gen) so it may not be exactly the same but the principal/theory/diagnosis would essentially be the same.

Has anyone had any experience with the MBRP resonators? for only another 90$ i can add that in and maybe reduce some of the annoying noise? or so they say...

I think the gasket is crushed. When we were bolting it down, it was definitely cocked bad, I would t be surprised if the seal got damaged. I crawled underneath a couple of time to feeel for a leak but no air. I keep it in my garage so no condensation. I imagine the gasket is cheap so I will just order one. Would be great to replace that before installing new muffler, which arrives on Wednesday. Will let you know how it goes.

Just installed the new muffler. I have to say I like it a lot. It's a very different sound from the S5338409. Different tone and not as loud when accelerating at lower speeds. The description MPRB gave me was accurate, it sounds more "earthy". I only took it for a short ride, will do a longer drive tomorrow. Getting the pipes apart was a mother-fer. I was hoping I would be able to slide the muffler off w/o having to remove the back end of the exhaust but I was mistaken. Anyway, if anything changes, I will update. Part number for the muffler replacement is W190809. No idea what I'm going to do with the louder muffler.

Is there such a thing as exhaust "Break in"? I have the dual exit cat-back on a 3rd gen and when I first put it on it was almost TOO loud. Also experienced the drone almost anyone will warn you about. But now, about ~4 months later, it has settled into a really nice, low, rumble. People think I have a V-8 :rofl:Only at WOT does it go back to that overly aggressive roar. No drone now as well. Think the average temperatures of the season change play a part? I absolutely love how it sounds now. Note: K&N filter and SABM applied up front.:burnrubber:

I was curious so a quick google search with some other auto and performance forums suggests that a combo of packing oil burning off, insulation products settling in, and carbon building up to coat the inside of the exhaust components, can over time make the sound deeper and sometimes quieter. this is good news for me because i have been concerned the exhaust i want was too loud and high pitched, so if MBRP will mellow in 4-6months i may jump for it... Will go with the resonator just to be sure.

Just a little MBRP plug - Over the last few months since the MBRP install I have been asked about my exhaust more than a few times in parking lots around town (Target, grocery stores, etc). I recently went camping at Colorado Bend State Park (TX) and was getting compliments left and right about how good my truck sounded with the MBRP exhaust. Three different people on three different days actually.

I'm really happy with it. It gives the truck a little more balls without being on steroids.

If you're on the fence, just bite the bullet and do it, then dynamat the back to reduce drone. Just sayin...

Does the MBRP exhaust with a turn down hang below the frame rails any?

I should've provided more info - I have the exhaust that exits the passenger side, not the turn down.

Is it still the straight pipe back to the muffler? Im curious if the front parts are the same with different tail pipe sections.
