The Evidence would seem to disagree - apparently when in learning mode the trucks drive great- this leads me to believe the people writing the programming are the issue -

Perfectly normal! Asked dealership. No really all vehicles do it. That is if you washed it they run better for a short time afterwards.
    Perfectly normal.

Vehicle always runs better after a wash and oil change. More power, smoother...feel like I could actually pass an F150 ecoboost. :D

If I could take the exterior and drivetrain of my 2013 and combine that with the interior of my 2016 Id have my dream truck. I just keep it in the 4 to 6 area on the tach, the powers not bad just up so high.

This guy finds that his truck is a bit more peppy after disconnecting the ground for 5 minutes. It'd be a simple and free test to see if you can get back to that quick feeling.

They changed the engine oil, my wife comments on the improved running every time I change it in her Highlander. Then in 2 or 3 days you get used to it...

Cleared learning. My service department did the same thing at 5k. Same characteristics until it relearned.

It's not the engine, it makes plenty of power, it's not the trans, the trans only does what it's told.
The programming is the issue. Particularly the ETCS-I

That's what has me so excited about what the folks at @OVTune are working on. Toyota has intentionally engineered a more subdued power output for these
trucks, and Orange Virus Tuning is working on a fix for that.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
But... but... that doesn't generate more power.

I used to do this with my old dodge but I think it reset the whole fly by wire ecu stuff. It had way more response until it learned and drove terrible again.

OP I agree with the others that most likely they either disconnected the battery or they flashed the ECU.

All jokes aside, I had them run the TSB 0077 16 rev 1 and I noticed a considerable improvement. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/t-sb-0077-16-rev-1.457782/

Maybe ask them if they did that? All they have to do is hook it up to the diagnostic machine and run the software update. Check your service report.
