Man it just all depends on what you want to spend honestly and how much space you want to take up to mount it. I have had a bunch of radios over the years that i used for work everyday. Probably my favorite was a stryker. True its in the $400-$500 range, and its a large chassis radio, but it will talk for miles when you get your swr's set just right with a good antenna match.

Mine seems to work quite well. Just make sure you have the right antenna and tuned. Mine hasn't failed me in 11 years of almost constant use. I can talk to others on the trails with great Rx/Tx distances. On the road for many miles is great, depending on the terrain I can easily get about 10 miles and it's pretty hilly around here.

Oh, don't get something because it matches something else. Get it because it works.

Yes the 520XL will fit in the ashtray slot. I had the 510XL in my 1st gen for 12 years. Have it peaked and tuned and it will be fine. I also had a mag mount antenna with mine.

You'll have to cut out the rear of the plastic ashtray bracket to have it go in all the way, otherwise it would be sticking out 3-4 inches.

It's a great little radio for trail riding. If he was going to blow $400-500 in a communication setup he might as well go HAM.

This. My 520 xl does amazingly. I even modded it to be able to mount a switch panel to mine.

IMG_20170217_130700.jpg 520xl are bullet proof. Mics leave alittle to be desired so go ahead and spend the money on a good mic.

I like that color because it matches my dash and radio. I'm planning on mounting a CB radio in the ash tray, is there a noticeable difference in anything between the three Cobra models offered on Amazon?

How's it holding up for you on areas that get touched and cleaned? That's the one thing I'm concerned about - thinking about painting all my interior panels.
