What kind of tent is that? It looks like my Coleman Insta-tent but more heavy duty.

Not a camping action shot, but I did camp. 2 nights in lucern valley. Love this tent! 90 hard dirt miles from camp to slash X and back. Avg MPH was just under 30. thing is a tank

First off, what an awesome thread. This really gets the ideas flowing in my head...

I've been playing with the idea to get my truck in a position to where I can do a cross country trip in either 1 or 2 years. I've only been out west once and it was for business.

For those with their RTTs mounted to the truck. Do you find it in the way when you want to do some exploring but have to breakdown camp to do so?

For those with RTTs mounted on a trailer. Do you ever find it hard on the truck to haul a trailer through moderate off-road terrain?

I can't decide what direction I want to go, and there seems to be plenty of professionals on here. Any pointers or advice would be appreciated!

I have a Flip-Pac but same issues as a RTT in that you need to collapse it to go exploring. I think it really depends on the kind of exploring you do. I've found that in my exploring I'm often moving to a new camp every day so it is rare that I need to close things up just to go driving around and then come back to the same spot. Others probably have exactly the opposite experience!

Another difference is how much effort is actually involved it getting the vehicle ready to go as opposed to truly "breaking camp". Often "camp" is more than just an open RTT. So you can still leave all your other camp stuff out and the only "penalty" is the time it takes to take down the RTT and set it up again after a day of exploring.

    Different horses and courses!

I think in my head I imagine myself in a different location every night. Maybe a few longer stops if I find a place that begs me to stay longer. I always planned to mount the RTT above my Softopper, but I started to second guess myself.

This thread has totally motivated me. Going on a 5 day overlanding trip on June 8th with some 4Runners. Then, camping end of June.
