I could do it. Order up the parts. If all they need are new screens, its not bad. If the chassis is bent or broken, that gets a bit messy. I dont have an ifixit kit but can probably borrow one from work, or i can order one. I should have a long time ago...
At work i had to pull the logic board from an iphone that someone had twisted in half. The case and battery were toast but the board was intact.

 

And for cases, otterbox is probably the most stout thing i have seen in action. But bulky though
