2nd Gen- Rust Recalls

Ahh I heard it on the news a few minutes ago
Now 2nd gens are having short and long term frame rust problems...

I dont know what to think, the media needs to shut their mouths and let toyota handle it like they always have done

 

I've got some rust starting on my forward cab mounts and frame rails, not unmanageable but getting bad. I wouldn't call it a defect though, from the day I left Oregon and got here in MA, the NE weather... salt roads etc has been eating away. Gonna be a summer project with some POR 15.

Recall probably not, TSB? who knows, but either way most of us probably wont see it due to mileage on our cars... stupid cheatin bastards...

 

The media is really starting to aggravate me with all these anti-Toyota stories. Why don't they cover the POS american cars and their defects which are more common.

 

New here so flame away, but the media just report the stories. If the truck has a rust problem, Toyota built it not CNN. Now for the average JOE out there, learning of an issue on CNN and getting it fixed is really a good idea. I don't expect every car to have the acceleration problem, but if my neighbors does and he fixes it because of a news story and my 7 year old son doesn't get run over then I am all for it. And I know when Ford was getting the heat for their issue the same news stories were running about them as well.

 

Toyota built their reputation for quality as a strategy to sell cars to people who value quality over everything else. Well it turns out they chucked the quality along the way to becoming the number one auto maker and hid the fact from the public. Toyota has become the Tiger Woods of the car industry. Exposed hypocrisy is always a big story.

 

Dude, I'm surprised that anything survives where you live. My '03 sat on a dealer's lot in Falmouth over a winter before I bought it new in March/April. They had to replace the rear bumper before it left the lot. Underneath was well on it's way too. Rattle cans and a wire brush twice a year kept it in check pretty well though.

 

Its not the medias fault the frames are rusting...look around here there are many threads on 2nd gens starting to rust, we've known about this for a while, but my 45yr old neighbor probably wouldn't because he doesn't sit on tacomaworld. I think its good the media is reporting it, as long as it is factual.

 

Man I love my Tacoma just as much as anyone else, but to sit here and defend Toyota if they just passed the sub par crap onto the 2nd Gens that they used on the 1st Gens just doesn't make sense. Just look at the spring tsb. They have been using the same sub par parts year after year now when they should have switched at the factory at least a year or two ago at minimum. Defend what should be defended. Not the greed that Toyota is currently. Everyone wants to get mad at the dealers on stuff like the tsb for the springs, etc... But hmmm the problem to me is at the top.

The underside of these trucks rust fast. Period. I can go to a same year car\truck as mine (07) and it doesn't display the same amount as rust as the Tacoma does. So to sit here and say otherwise is just BS. Heck I even get the salt off ASAP so it isn't a neglect issue. Just admit that the damn things rust faster than they should.

As stated on a different thread, I just got rid of a 1995 Dodge Dakota that spent the last 15 years on salted, gravelled roads. The frame had only surface rust, and the body had none. You guys are clueless if you think you are getting even a similar level of rust resistance from Toyota. For a company that has built it's reputation on quality, things like this are major. How is a vehicle better, just becasue it won't die? My first dakota ('92) lasted 298 000kms. Original engine, tranny, diffs and most of the mechanical parts, (traded in..). Lots of those miles were earned 1/4 mile at a time. Just because the current Dakota is a turd, doesn't mean it always was.
A manufacturer that has chronic rust problems for 30 years straight is signing it's own death certificate.

 

I thought the rusty frame recalls were only for 2000-2003 Tundras...what years are included for the Tacos?

I like my truck. But it pisses me off how many little things I have had to fix. Don't sing me the same stupid song about if I had a Chevy or Ford I would really have issues. I didn't have 1/2 the issues when I did. At least our bed won't rust.

All I know is that my truck was an ordered truck and everything under it looks coated so I am not worried, But I have to tell ya Toyota took real good care of me on my frame rusted 99 reg cab, they gave me 10,065 and the truck had hail damage, brogen back glass, broken mirror, dented fender and door, took my stereo out. but it only had 103000 miles.

BTW I have a friend that road me when I bought my 06 Toyota and just the other day he was tell'n me he had to do something about his 04 tahoe cuz it has 99,000 miles on it and I told him he should have bought a toyota and he would get 299,000

I drove a Nissan that was full of problem but rust was not one of them, after five years in salt that is used extensively there was not one spec of rust, I have had the Tacoma 1 month about and while under it noticed many rust spots developing .

That sucks ....... and yota needs to wake up about this

1990 light-duty 4x2 and club-cab w/V8: Frame can crack at steering-gear attachment and/or mounting bolts can fracture, allowing steering gear to separate.
1990: Valve cover gasket may allow oil leakage.
1991 2WD: Right front-brake hose may rub against tire during full-left turn.
1991 w/4-speed automatic: Fuel hose may contact wiring harness, resulting in leakage.
1991: Premium steering wheel could crack and separate from hub.
1991-92 w/A500 automatic transmission: Inadvertent placement of shift lever in "Reverse" can occur when driver believes it has been placed in "Park."
1993: ABS could become inoperative when hard pedal effort is applied.
1994: Control-arm attaching bolts were not properly heat treated. If they break, steering control could be lost.
1994: Dealers will install a redesigned steering-wheel back cover to keep extra keys from getting caught behind the wheel when the key is in the ignition.
