So my wife and I got in an argument tonight. Is her ride a "truck" or a "car"

    It's got a 1" lift and 33" duratracs.

I have the same argument with my dad all the time. Claims his 4Runner is a truck...

What frame is it built on? My 89 4Runner was just a Toyota pickup with a camper and back seats. How far has the new 4Runner strayed from its roots?

Far. But it still HAS a frame other than most SUVs because of that I'd let it pass. Has coil springs instead of leaves in the rear tho

Legally speaking they are "light trucks" or "off-highway vehicles" in most cases.

Body on frame being important difference from the beginning. I also believe they made SUV's before anyone called them that...so did they sale as trucks or cars?

I call my new T4R a truck. Even though in my heart, I know it is not. A "ute" is another good way to go.

The 2010+ 4Runners have the same frame as the overseas Land Cruiser Prado 150 (as does the Lexus GX460). The 2010-2014 FJC's used the short wheelbase LC Prado 150 frame. Prior to that the FJ and 4Runner used the Prado 120 frame. Both the 120 and 150 frame is a fully boxed ladder frame.

I'd say is hasn't strayed far from its roots at all. In 2010 when they released the 5th generation they added the manual transfer case, crawl control, multi terrain select and KDSS to the Trail edition. These systems were introduced in the Land Cruiser in 2008. To my knowledge, the Tacoma didn't get crawl control or multi terrain select until 2016. If I were to offer my opinion, I'd say the 4Runner has been leading the charge in Toyota's North America OHV capable vehicle lineup and the Tacoma has been following behind the 4Runners progression and decelopment.

    2003: 4.0 1GR introduced in the 4Runner
2005: 1GR introduced in newly designed Tacoma
2010: dual VVT-I 1GR introduced in 4Runner with CC and MTS on TE models.
2016: Tacoma introduced with 3.5L and CC, MTs on OR model

Doesn't the Ram have coil springs (5 link) in the rear as opposed to leaf springs?

If she wants to call it a truck, go for it. My wife calls our sequoia a truck. Whatever floats her boat

Or you could settle it by asking her to haul a few yards of manure in her truck:thumbsup:

Based on that argument this is a truck
    [IMG]

And, according to the NHTSA this is a truck too
    [IMG]

It kind of reminds me of the whole multiple gender thing, you can't look at the outside of something and know what is going on under the covers. IMO you should call your motor vehicle (or gender) whatever floats your boat.

When I drove my dad's 99 T4R before I got my Tacoma I called it a truck whenever it came about in conversation. To me it feels wrong calling it a car.

I call mine a truck. If a unibody ridgeline can be called a truck, so can my BOF 4Runner.

In Virginia, a vehicle is defined by its weight. For instance, as per VA Code § 46.2-100, the section defines a pickup truck as "every motor vehicle designed for the transportation of property and having a registered gross weight of 7,500 pounds or less..."

So, then everything is a truck? I mean if you put a bag of groceries in the trunk and drive it home aren't you transporting property?

I too have a difficult time understanding this. That is just what the code section states. I have studied the code to a certain extent but I have come to the conclusion that it's written weirdly.
