I worked for a large office supply chain when I was in high school/beginning of college. Typical closing on week nights was 9 PM (still late enough where it was pointless, store was dead after 8). During back to school, we'd be open until 11 instead. Total sales between 8 and 11 would be maybe $250 on a good night. Almost no one came in. And, you were paying four people to be there for those three hours.

So, average maybe $12/hr between the four of them times three hours and you're at $144.

I'd say typical margin on non-electronics stuff probably averaged 30%. (Electronics were typically barely marked up and sometimes had negative margin). $250 in sales meant $75 profit. That's only half the salaries, not to mention the extra cost of the lights being on full power, heat/ac, etc.

It was fun on slow days to go around with the handheld inventory gun and see what cost and margin was on things.

When my wife asks where something is, I always respond with 'it's right where you left it'. She keeps saying something like that's how spousal abuse starts but I haven't make the connection yet :notsure:
Ouch, that's a little hot. Dragged my trailer to VT yesterday, cruise set at 70 most of the way, 210 was the hottest I saw and s whopping 9 MPG.
