A sales agent has absolutely no bearing on the claim handling, and policies only work within a set of parameters

I'm not doubting what you've gotten, but there's not really any way to "make sure it's totaled" other than the vehicle is actually damaged to the percentage that the particular company sets

If a premier policy holder calls and says "i pay you xxxxx for premium insurance do not fuck this guy". it would have a bearing.. but im not sure that happened. Im pretty convincing on my own.. he told me to let him know if i wasnt happy. I havent had to.

What happens though if the O.P. sells the truck down the line, does he have too tell the new buyer about the damages (bent frame) that are not replaced but bent back ?

Rebuilt title. Very common and most people are oblivious to it. And just happy with saving a little on book value..

This is part of the problem. Where you've been before is irrelevant. What counts is where things stand right now.

Two comments, though. Typical vehicles are a depreciating assets, not an investment. And you should look up the definition of "sunk costs".

I know, you were told would be no math. However:
    • In post #84 above, you say they're offering a value of $23075 plus a sales tax offset of $923, for a total of $23,998. This would let you pay off the $19,000 loan (post #65) and put $5,000 in your pocket
    • However, you are accepting a check of $17,738 plus the vehicle. You'll need to come up with another $1300 to pay off your loan.
    • Instead of having $5,000 and no loan, you pay that $5000, plus the $1300 loan, plus $2500 to fix the cosmetics but not the frame, and the truck gets a salvage title.
QED, you are buying a salvage title truck that will still have frame damage for $5000+$1300+2500 = $8800 minimum.

I'll call BS on this one. But, if you're so sure, you can surely point to some reference in your area (Craigslist posts, etc.) that a salvage title truck is selling for anything like that.

Now, be honest. Just like the rest of us, you have to have seen these kinds posts of someone who has buck fever about a particular truck and is trying to talk himself into a deal that he knows is wrong.

Again, $8800 minimum. Sorry, but math doesn't accept the reasoning from happytalk posts. Because there's only 2 choices left at this point:
    • Sitting on your couch with $5000 of the insurance company's money in your pocket, or
    • Sitting in the truck with $3800 or more of your money in other people's pockets.
Your purchase price for the truck remains the difference between the two: $8800 minimum.

And now we add that cost to the $8800, heading over $10,000. For a seven year old truck with a salvage title.

You know, there's a reason you don't see wolves trying to swim upstream. The ones that survive to stay in the hunt know enough to get out of the water and hunt elsewhere. The ones who don't tend to be found drowned at the base of the falls.

I didn't read the entire thread but the moral of the story is that some folks should have to be retested by a professional driving instructor before they're allowed to drive a 'huge new Tahoe'.

Uh, only if they're paying cash. Once a bank gets involved, it becomes really apparent. It also often creates an issue when the buyer tries to insure it.

Many banks loan on rebuilds. Many dont... not sure about where you live but the clean trades here go to major big dealers mostly. All the rest go to low level dealers. And there are tons of them. Preditory loans really. They help no credit people by doing in house financing. And those people dont care as long as it looks good and drives fine.

I know Allstate insures rebuilts. And worse case i only get liability. The truck is fine and will be fixed. Its a work truck. I was already freaking about having to use such a nice truck for work and i wanted tonget a car so i didnt habe to drive the truck all the time but i couldnt jutify a second payment. Now i can.. soo.... works for me.

Wow. I know vehicles. I know the car game. Ive done body work on many vehicles ive sold, I have my truck in my possession, ive extensively driven it and examined the damage. I know what im getting into. Its a simple one week in the shop fix. For 2500 max and that includes the frame adjustment.

And hey.. even if its 10k total. Thats a hell of a lot better than 22k plus 5 years interest on the 19k loan. Its a work truck for me. Ill take that other 12k plus and buy me a nice car

And your math... lets make it simple... i paid 3k down. Ive made one payment of 350 so far. If i paid say 3k to fix the truck which is high. Thats 6,350 dollars. Even if i paid the thousand in payoff difference out of pocket and I count the 1200 for the new Trd wheels, weathertech mats, bed mat,new cd player and bed rack. All in ...10k ish. If i let it be taken and take another loan out on a new truck then put these wheels and accesories on the new truck. Pay that loan interest. Itll be atleast 30k all in there. Prob more... so its a no brainer. 10k vs 30k?? What the problem?

The only valid negative from an outer perspective is "what if the truck has bad frame damage or transmission issues.. it doesn't. It drives like it did before.. the bend in the frame is the last few inches where the tow package attaches. The truck wasnt going that fast.. it hit a mailbox not a dump truck

And "what if you cant insure it". You can. Its easy to do.. maybe it wont be worth as much if i wreck it later... so what... i just paid the cheapest price ive ever even heard of for a Tacoma like mine with the mileage.. this truck would sell as is for almost 10k at auction to these buy here pay here lots that dont care and sell rebuilds for top dollar to people without credit.. as i said. I know the car game... ive personally called about many Tacomas that were priced what i considered fairly (becaise they are normally sky high ridiculous) and they had rebuilt titles.

I am an agent and we have no say, If a customer called me and told me not to fuck someone I would say sorry I have no say, The insurance company is going to look out for the customer and the companies best interest. They do not care about you....

All this talk about you "Controlling the situation" is bogus, Be happy that they are willing to work with you in a good way.

i am happy.. and i dont know what was potentially said or done by the guy whos wife hit me or his agent buddy. When it happened he made it sound like id have no complaints about the settlement. He was very confident. Myself.... I am extremely convincing. And able to control situations better than your average person.. but maybe i didnt have any effect either and somehow with no variables im getting the best settlement ive ever heard of. I am happy though.

You remind me of Donald Trump, I am not saying thats a bad thing... but boy you are confident, Btw your truck will be salvage title, The only way to make it a Rebuilt title is to have it (professionally fixed) As in a certified shop, as in $$$ and then you have to have your state inspect it and sign off on it.

    just a FYI.

Your Insurance will not insure the salvage title either. They maybe will insure it if it is deemed rebuilt.

I cant imagine a state inspector signing off on a guys truck that all he did was bend the frame back and cosmetically fixed it.

Trump is a douchebag embarassment. I make no claims im not gonna back up. Were talking a simple frame tweak and 2 bumpers. For the 10th time. I sold cars for.years. for myself. Buying. Reconditioning and selling. All work done be me. I know what a salvage vs rebuilt title.is. im gonna drive the truck till i find the right shop. I could care less about what the title status is in the meantime. Im not scared. I drove without insirance illegally for over 10 years..ive drove a whole bunch of cars l bought to sell with whatever tag came on it.. No tag...some with no title.. etc. Ive had insirance for a good while and ive def. Gotten mpre legal and in not doing those things anymore.. but yeah... thos isnt scary for me.

im not afraid of an inspection. Or some repairs. Truthfully the damage done has nothing to do with the safety of the vehicle. Especially if i show them the pic of the accident. Im sure itll pass inspection as is honestly. Then ill fix at my leisure. If i took my time i could fix this truck.for 1000 all in.
