Any woodworkers?

Built this corner cupboard a few years ago to house my antique camera collection. The facade is made from a wild cherry tree I cut down myself.

 

Looks good Make sure the entire table is absolutely flat.

 

Its very flat except for the stamped steel wings. They're a little cheesy in my opinion. They should've charged a little extra and went cast with them like the main table. If I could find some cast wings for it at a reasonable cost, I'd buy them and get rid of the stamped junk.

 

Woodworker here, just sold my 70's vintage craftsman table saw for a Delta.

 

Any of you use General Finishes stain? Any tips and tricks you'd like to share?

I'm having issues with brush strokes drying before I can wipe them up. Maybe the temperature I'm working at? It's been in the 90's here in Florida.

Any way to clean up those dried brush strokes outside of sanding? I'm trying to get a more even stain.

Stain and pain rhyme for a reason. 90 is going to have fast drying, so I'd aim for better temps. (Early? Late?) You didn't say what species wood, but for softwoods like pine, a pre-stain conditioner will sometimes help with blotching/streaking/etc. Make sure the pre-stain is compatible with your stain.

 

It's white oak, and some red oak. It's a hallway bench/shoe storage made from reclaimed wood (dunnage) from the railroad.

I looked at it again just now and there are a few spots I missed:

 

I found a set of cast wings for my table saw. It'll require some new holes but it'll be worth the effort I think.

I think people over think the wings on the table saws. As long as they don't hump over the main table and can provide support for the piece you are cutting I don't think they matter all that much.

If you are dead set on something flatter than the stamped steel ones I would make a torsion box and put some laminate over them and save yourself $175.

 

I'd be tempted to try using a new utility knife blade like a card scraper to knock down that overage.

 

Well, I went ahead and ordered them. I thought about a torsion box as a solution. I decided that since this is going to be my main saw for the next 10-15 years, I may as well splurge a little. YOLO.

 

Going back to look at the ebay page I got to wonder how the hell the shipping on those bad boys is free.

 

I agree it is very strange because they're like 70 lbs. Everywhere else, they're listed at $270. Even at the eBay seller's own website it's $270 with free shipping anything over $49.

Maybe they're knockoffs? I guess I'll find out soon enough.

 

Good idea, didn't think about that at all. I'll have a go at it in the AM once I locate my card scraper.

 

I picked up the Harbor Freight dust collection system today with their 25% off coupon.

There are several YouTube videos that illustrate different ways to improve on the HF unit with a Thien baffle setup. It looks like it'll be a fun project to do.

 

I hooked mine up to a dust deputy, flipped the motor around and put a filter on it.

 

You have a link to the filter you used and which dust deputy? I may just go that route to save some time.

It looks like they have a larger one now, that has a 6 inch opening, though I'm not sure the HF motor could handle that.

I originally ordered 10' of hose, and just had a direct connection to my table saw, but have since split it to include the miter saw, and just use blast gates to control the air flow.

The barrel on the bottom I bought of Craigslist from a local guy. Just look on your local list for a barrel that has the locking metal ring on the top. This is very helpful as it creates a nice seal and keeps the dust/wood chips from going everywhere.
