Haha i think growin up thats what everone said it was buts its some kind of worn or insect, basically every pecan tree down here looks like that

 

Most people say/think it's a wood borer instect of some sort. Yellow bellied sapsucker, close relative to the woodpecker will be the cause. They are going for the sap beneath the holes they make in the bark.
I have a yard full of 80 year old pecan trees that have the same holes. They do it to my maples Also.

Love hate relationship with self pruning pecan trees haha i guess they are fine as long as you never leave anything under them

 

Yeh they drop a good bit of limbs but I sure do love lookin at them tho. I like how the limbs hang down about 4ft off the ground.

 

I feel like some people may have peckers that get confused for worms all the time...
