I use 91 or above. But mainly because of having a European turbocharged car for so long. Not sure if it makes any difference compared to 87 octane.

I run mid grade because the detergents which only seem to come in premium. So I get half the detergents I guess.

89 is just a mix of 91/87. Literally.

85 on my last tank. Haven't noticed any difference.

Okay, I've been sorting through this myself. I have run 87 most exclusively. I'll ocassionally run Shell 91 when I go offroading. I can't tell a power or gas milage difference, but noticed more pinging and engine sluggishness or lag on 87.

That being said, I recently found 91 octane, ethanol free near me after living here in Colorado Springs for 10 years. My efficiency has increased 3 mpgs after running a few tanks full. I was shocked. I don't know if I want to run 91 ethanol free all the time due to cost, but I was NOT expecting that big of a difference.

The difference is from ethanol content not octane. Now there IS a difference there in efficiency, but it is usually a good bit more expensive. Ethanol free 91 is common here, I like to use it for small engines.

I run 89 from a Shell station. I've tried most everything else and it seems to like this the best.

I've been having major shaking issues since the my 2016 Taco was new. Some people call it Lugging or a shutter, but at low RPM's while accelerating the truck will start kicking. Sometimes you can barley fell it, other times it feels like I'm riding the rumble strip on the highway. Last week when I was near empty, I filled up with Premium 93 from Costco. After driving it for a week, I have started to notice that the lugging has stopped completely. Higher Octane gas will help with performance, living in Florida at sea level and the heat can cause knocking issues that high octane gas can solve. The shaking was violent in some cases, it stopped almost immediately with 93 octane. Has anyone else noticed the issue?

Yes. But after running the premium for a bit the shaking came back worse. Some people can claim that octane makes no difference, and perhaps with certain configurations and locations (temps, altitude, etc.,) that's true but my fact-based experience has me on 89. No chirps or shaking and minimal engine vibes which were all present on 87 (and eventually on 93)

they can very easily Flash the computer and raise the RPMs which would solve the issue. But if that flash lowered the MPGs it would open up Pandora's box on Toyota.

Yeah same thing for me. However, I usually go with cheap gas and accelerate harder to stay out of lugging / missing feeling.

I did 3 straight tanks of 93 and didn't have the poor behavior and chirps return (which was nice!). Came back immediately when I returned to 87 though...

Anyway sorry to disappoint those who think it shouldn't matter, but my truck runs noticeably different on higher octanes... maybe its just another quirk of my truck. :frusty:

I noticed the same change you did and have stuck with 91/93 for the last 2500 miles. This was winter time in TN and the issue has never returned.
