I have about 115,000 on my truck on stock rear brakes. my pedal fills soft so I was thinking it was time for new rear brakes. I took it into the dealer they said that they was still good but they would replace them if I wanted. I got the drums turned and new brake pads installed for 229.50 not to bad. they said they bleed them and the truck stops better.

Sounds like a fair deal. Worth it since truck stops better.

Bedrug, Viper alarm and remote starter, Access tonneau cover, Low off road 3/1 suspension lift, locking tailgate.
Soft pedal is usually air in the lines. Bleeding out the air should indeed solve the problem. You usually change front pads 2-3 times before changing rear shoes. Did they check the front pads?

I looked at them at about 75,000 miles and they did not look bad. they told me that they was not bad but they did say that the drums needed turned so no reason to use old brakes on new turned drums. I already had it in the shop so just do them.

I swear I had to replace my fronts around 20-30k. I'm at 6x,xxx now and rears are still looking great.

When I replaced my fronts the rears were barely worn on my truck. Makes sense since most of your stopping power is your front brakes

I kind of hate the brakes on these trucks. They are overly grabby initially IMHO and when you really lay into it to stop they aren't really that impressive- even for a truck. I've been waging an ongoing war with the rears and their high tendency to squeal at low speeds with about 50% brake pressure applied, still can't seem to figure that one out.

I need to adjusts rears and replace front pads. I'm about to turn 90,000 miles on the originals. I tow and wheel with a very heavy (for a Taco) truck on load E true 33s.

The brakes have been great under the abuse they see.

I have a mix of driving. hauling a 3500lb camper 4 times a year, half back roads and half high way.

front rotors didn't have enough left to be turned and pads barely had anything left on them but one was half down to metal and that's when I heard the grinding noise telling me to change them.

I've been wondering if anyone else wore like mine have, I'm at nearly 160k on original brakes all around. Pretty unbelievable! I had it at the dealer at 90k for a bad front wheel bearing and they told me the fronts were around 50%. Mostly highway miles, manual transmission... gotta love it!!!

Pretty good deal! Im all about getting stuff done at the dealership if the price is right, cause if they mess up you can easily hold them accountable.

I would bet money your improved braking is from bleeding the brakes. Brake fluid is only useful for so long. In an ideal world, you would bleed them every 3 years or so, and at minimum every time you replace brakes. Rear drums last a longgggg time. I've seen cars with over 200k on them with stock rear brakes, still in decent condition. There's a front braking bias, especially with rear drum, so they don't have a huge impact on feel.

That being said, that's a fairly decent dealer price.

Should have replaced the pads and rotors yourself. Would have saved a ton, and it's very easy to do.

By the way, why do they machine rotors rather than just replace them with new ones? Isn't the cost about the same?
