i was out wheelin a bit and heard a pop while going up a steep sand hill. i have broke many dana 30/35/44/60 and gm 10 bolts. and it didnt sound bad at the time. soon after i heard a light continus clunk.. sounded like i broke a tooth off the spiders or R/P. not really having time i let it slide awhile. it eventually snowed and i had to use 4x4 1 time.. and the pop/clunk turned into a steady grind like the front output of the T case was slipping.. while driving in 2 wheel it then went to what seemed to be a bad bearing from the 1960 that had used water as grease. lol.. Its a 01 taco 3.4 auto trd btw.. my questions are. what all turns in the frontend when in 2 wheel? any1 have a good diagram of the t case.. rf1a i believe is the model ?? after i pull the front cv's how to you check they for play etc?

Everything turns but the front drive shaft if you have ADD.

Put it in 4x4 with the Front shaft missing and see what happens.

Try putting it in 4wd with the drive shaft removed and see if it returns.

i can do highway speed without the front d shaft with t case engaged in 4x4.. and nothing... i do think my front d shaft spins while in 2 wheel.. removing it did a band aid fix.. for whatever was turning with it... do you think it could create that much force on another component while free spinning? or is the u joint just that jacked?

Your front drive shaft should only spin while in 4wd. It is disengaged at the diff and t-case while in 2wd. Drain both your t-case and diff and see which one has metal shavings. I would also replace the u-joints for good measure and the "while you're in there" factor.

i drained the t case and front diff.. no abnormal shavings to be found. picked up a couple new u joints for the front shaft. pinion bearing seems tight. deff have a shot bearing on the front output on the t case. which i believe is on the driven sprocket. guess i will locate an overhaul kit and tear into this weekend. prolly still gonna pull the front cv's and drop the diff. take a little peek in there too. feel free to chime in if you know where to get a master rebuild kit for the t case

If he has ADD, its not disco'ed at the diff......Its an Axel disconnect. So it will still spin.

Good point, the diff is still connected to the left (driver) side axle.

thats good 2 know... everything from the tires/ cv's /to the mating flange on the front diff pinion turns. so it looks like a t case rebuild and a quick u joint swap ftm

To the u-joints first. That could be the only issue. How often do/did you use 4wd?

If you can, grease them to see if that changes anything. That could pin-point the issue.

I am not sure about an actual inspection procedure regarding them. As long as they are making a ticking sound sound on sharp turns, the boots are intact, and there is no vibration I would assume they are ok. That's just an assumption though.
