Alright I have a feeling this has been asked before but I've searched and couldn't find what I was looking for. So will a 305/70r16 tire work under a first gen with 3" of lift? Or would a 285/75r16 be a better option? Mainly concerned about the front, specifically rubbing on the inside at full lock. Won't mind a little trimming. Not too worried about the front valence because I plan on a bumper in the future. The tire I'm looking at is the Mickey Thompson Baja mtz.
    Thanks!

Most people can fit 285's with a 2.5 or 3" lift with a little bit of trimming.

I would just search for the tires you want, and there's more than likely someone out there who's tried them and what they did to get them to fit.

But if you're looking to wheel with it, 99% of the time you don't need anything bigger than the 285's at most. Hell, my 265's are plenty capable for the vast majority of wheelin' people do. When you go the big manly size tires, all you do is end up jacking the truck into the sky just to get them to fit, which is the exact opposite of what you want (you want a low center of gravity). There's a reason you always see the hill billies with 42's flipping over all the time...

Yea there is a point when they just get to big and pretty much useless. From what I found the 285 and the 305 have the same diameter, but the tread width is and inch or so wider on the 305. The reason I'm looking at the 305s is because I will have a 10 wide wheel and I don't know if 11 inches of tread will stretch too much for my liking.

Ill chime in, I have 285/75R16 with a 3in lift and my wheels have 3.5in back spacing, the tires rubbed on the pinch weld even when turned and articulating even though I cut all the fender liner away and smashed the pinch weld with a sledge hammer. I just installed a 1in body lift from daystar and all the rubbing has stopped, the tire longer touches the body at all so now I plan on going with 305/70R16 and hopefully they dont rub anywhere new

That's where I was worried about rubbing. I didn't figure it would be that bad with 285s though, but the wheels I will have are a 4" backspace instead of 3.5" which would probably make a difference for sure

Normal driving it was good but out wheeling it rubbed alot. The 1in body lift solved more then just tire rubbing it solved body roll and random squeaks that would drive me nuts. Im very happy with the truck now and im lookibg forward to the 305's

Dilemma. I just paid for new wheels and tires from 4Wheel (31"x10.5/15R Toyo AT with ProComp 15x10 Alum Flat Black with 3.75 back space). Placed order over the phone, my mistake. No mention of backspace, my mistake and theirs. Front wheels rub on back of wheel-well at full lock, shit. Rear wheels definitely stand out about 1-inch further than old wheels ('88 Centerlines 15x10). No exchanges at 4Wheel for Mounted Wheels, shit, knew that tho. Thought the guy at 4Wheel knew more than I did about my truck, my mistake. So, my plan is to replace the front rims with something that will work (and keep the $140 Tires). Rims were $70 a piece, live and learn. Can I put 15x8's on the front? Or will a 4.25in back space fix the rub issue?? I need the old Centerlines off of the truck, for when I sell it, someday. Not going to do a front lift kit, new rims are cheaper and a lot easier to DIY. Any suggestions is helpful.

But I'd say buy some wheel spacers and roll with it.

How would a spacer help, wouldn't it push the wheel even further outside the well?

If so I don't think there's an option besides new wheels. I wouldn't expect a 31x10.50 to rub though even with that backspace
