I have a 2003 Double Cab, and am needing more punch to the stereo. I have seen the options are a completely custom box and system, or these low profile powered sub woofers.
My question is; What brand units have you all used, and to what success? I am seeing several brands... Boss, Rockville, Soundstorm, Planet Audio, Cerwin, Audio Pipe, SSL Etc.
Of course none of the normal high end brand names.... have any of you used these and had any issues?

    Thanks!

Subbed for replies. I, too, am interested in adding some bottom end to my double cab. Not much room for a regular sub. Especially with all my tools behind the rear seat.

I believe there was another own her decided to cut the bottom of the cab under the rear seat to make room for subs. He did weld on some sheet metal though. Not my thing but hey he got the room he needed to add subs under the seats.

I did the kicker hide away 8 inch sub, added a pioneer dd head unit.the head unit really works the stock speakers, don't let the 8 inch size fool you.it sounds awesome.when I'm really pumping the tunes, you can't see nothing from center mirror.comes with all the wiring you need.wired it to feed from rear door speakers.need extra wired to go to head unit.but power ground and rem wired all included.......it does not have rca inputs....I wired the feed when installing my head unit.really the most impressive upgrade was the head unit...sound awesome.Bluetooth.all that.....

I wish it had rca inputs...using a line-out converter causes ground noise.

    I mean… it’s a Ford, you don’t care
I have a kicker hideaway hs8 and love it! Picked up an RCA conversion harness and wired to the sub outputs on my pioneer HU

I run mine full range.I tryed the sub out,but I'm a rock guy.you would have to hear it to believe how clear and crisp it is at high volume 30+.my unit goes to 60 I think.I still have to dyno mat the doors, install baffles and convert the doors to 6.5 kickers.ya know what....I'm going to order them right now.

I squeezed a 12" Kicker shallow mount sub, and found a Kicker 2 channel amp to replace the cheap one that the PO installed. The box isn't ideal as I can't move the seats back to the furthest point, but Im short so it works! I listen to a variety of music, and have Kicker tweeters in the doors, and with the stock front speakers and a new headunit (the newest ones have great amps in them!) the whole system sounds great. Doesn't hit super low, but works! I am planning on building my own box to fit lower down, and maybe go with 2 8's or a 10.

This is what I did, 3 8" kickers in a custom box. The seats do fold up by the way.

I ran a JL 8W3 in the JL box and LOVED it. Plenty of punch ... even more than some 10s and 12s I tested. I just wanted more low end and punch, not looking to win competitions. Only ever turned it up halfway.

It sat behind the drivers seat on the floor mat with a thin blanket over it.

    Pros:
    • you don't have to sacrifice the limited storage space behind your rear seats
    • killer punch in a small package
    • wire with banana plugs = easily removable

    Cons:
    • you have to take it out if you're fitting 4 adults in the truck (not really an issue except once or twice for me)

Thanks for all the helpful info!
I have a stash of tools and such behind the back seat as well, so room is at a premium of course. I was looking at one of the low profile powered units thinking it would also fit behind the seats, or under one of the front seats.
Anyone have any specific experience with one the the all in one low profile units?

You can mount an amp under a front seat, but the sub needs a box and even a 6" wont fit under there.

I ended up making a custom box (like 10 years ago) that fits behind the rear driver side seat of my 2004 double cab.

It's a 10" woofer, a seriously old woofer, but it works. I tried using a newer woofer, but the magnet was too thick, and I didn't feel like going out and spending another $100 of a 8" woofer when my older 10" (lower profile magnet) was going to fit (barely). I'm not looking for earth shattering bass here, I've got kids that ride back there! Just needed some more lows.

Anyhoo, I had to take off the plastic cover on the rear of the seat and cut out the upholstery just for a few more 1/8's of an inch clearece.

Will try to get some pictures when I get home today...

Where did you fit it? Do you have the 8 or 10"?

I have a 10. Fits right under the seat and no one sees it so they don't want to steal it

Cool that it has a built in amp, and should fit under the driver seat, but I would run a tape measure under your seat (or even build a little box out of cardboard to set how far it might stick out the back. Also, it doesn't really look like that thing can be bolted down, I wouldn't want that thing just sliding around under there.

It has little rubber feet that you can attach and bolt down, or attach velcro like I did and it wont slide. It fits perfect underneath the seat of a first gen
