Hello all! New to the site and hoping to find a possible answer to my situation.

Bought the wrong a/c compressor for my 2003 3.4L Tacoma a few years ago. I am in the middle of replacing timing belt so after taking my dead a/c compressor out. I compared it to the wrong one, I bought. Look the same. Only difference is, the the old one has a 5.5 inch diameter pulley while the new one has a 5 inch diameter pulley. The one i bought as i realized after the fact! It is listed for the T-100 and Tundras with the 3.4 engine only. Does the difference matter? Is it possible to switch the pulleys? Thanks in advance!

if you switch out the clutch/pulley assembly I see no reason it shouldn't work. a compressor is just a simple pump.

the key is the wiring, does it have the same plugs as yours and ONLY the same plugs as yours.

newer compressors have crankshaft sensors that read the rpm of the compressor and talk to the ECM computer in the car and if the ECM doesn't think its turning to right speed it turns off the compressor. out trucks don't have this thank god but who knows what the compressor you have is for, THATS the question.

bottom line you got nothing to lose by throwing it in and seeing what happens, if you don't have extra electrical plugs on that new compressor you'll be fine

Thank you Keakar! Yes, wiring is the same. The clutch/pulley on my old one is froze up. I contacted seller on ebay that sells a/c compressor clutch kit for the 01-03 tacomas'. Gave him the model # of the wrong one and asked if I could switch them out. They replied, "The clutch is not the same in our books and will not change out
If you have any additional questions or concerns please let us know!
Thank you for contacting Pit Stop Auto"

If they are correct? I'm out of luck! Thank you Keakar!

    The Bed is stock...ish
So the only difference is that the pulley is 1/2" smaller? Does it have the same number of groves for the belt? Does it stick out the same?

I'm kinda leaning towards "send it" (give it a shot)... The only thing is, with a smaller pulley the compressor is going to spin faster... Idk.if that's a big deal or not though....

well then you cant use it if you have serpentine belt because the belt will slip. if you had regular fan belts you could adjust the belt tighter to make it work but that's not going to work on a serpentine belt setup

just resell the compressor you have on ebay for like 80% of what you paid for it and you get it sold fast.

buy the right compressor that fits

IMG_0592[1].jpg As you can see, same amount of grooves just a different look there where the pulley mounts. If i can get the old pulley/clutch off, I will see if it mounts. Thanks Coma!

the mounting points matter too, if the pulley sits in a different spot then the motor mounts may be off too

I would hate for you to mess up that compressor trying to make it work, once you start pulling the clutches off, there is no turning back.

but if you are willing to throw that new compressor in the trash if it doesn't work, then go for it because you have decided you have nothing to lose

LOL! I tried selling it on ebay for like $90 plus 15 shipping. I think i paid $180 for it on ebay. Even had it on craigslist for $50....nothing, no interest! Mounting points are the exact same. I am just going to but one...the "RIGHT" one! Thanks for the input guys!

well then I see no point in not trying it, if you cant sell it then you have "nothing" to lose in trying it

pull the clutch off the old one, put it on the new one, if it spins free and the pulley sits in the same spot as the original one did then its good to go

I was "only" cautioning you to not do it if you could still sell it to get your money back for it, that's my only reservation, but since you said you tried and couldn't sell it, you have nothing to lose so go for it and see if it work
