The hoppy Trader Joe's beers were brewed by Firestone Walker at one point (not sure if they still are). The other stuff was nowhere near as good.

Ha! My buddy (Bruery trustee) posted an almost identical picture yesterday.

Kinda like a sweeter DIPA. It's good. Not stellar, but I would drink it again.

Check the bottle date. Anything more than 30 days old, pass it up. I find Bell's Two Hearted is the same way. After a month, the hop character gets overwhelmed by the Crystal malt. Fresh, they are both amazing examples of Centennial hops.

    I agree with this statement.

Bells I feel will fade into a pretty good pale or amber style ale. Still good but not really an IPA anymore. Torpedo by SN is another good one that is ok even after a while.

On the other hand there are countless IPAs that fade into junk. Like there isn't anything under all those hops besides oxidation and cardboard.

The date thing is huge and I won't by a hoppy beer without one.

Only buy hoppy beers cold as well (hoping that the brewery/distributor/retailers have stored them cold of course). Oxidation speeds up with heat and will destroy a hoppy beer fairly quickly.

If you're interested in performing a little experiment, buy two of the same freshly brewed hoppy beers, store one in the fridge and one at room temperature for a month. When the month is up, put the warm one in the fridge overnight and try both of them side by side the next day. You will be shocked at how different they taste from one another.

But then I'd have to let 2 perfectly good beers be ruined by letting them sit that long :boink:

Just a suggestion for those interested in developing their tasting skills further. It really is an eye opener.

If you do this experiment with a hoppy beer you didn't particularly care for, you would still be able to taste the difference between the two and not waste perfectly good beer.

The fastest beer I've ever had degrade on me was a Zombie Dust. Those things are good for about 2 weeks and then their flavor degrades exponentially

That Fort Hill - Fresh Pick was similar. Changed very quickly. Was kinda bummed.

Centennial was a hop listed above that looses some of its punch early. I've found the same to be true with Galaxy.

On the other hand, Mosaic and Simcoe are a couple of hops that seem to retain their aroma/flavor for quite some time, in my experience. Of course this all depends on what malt it's paired with and the quality of the packaging (low DO's) and storage (cold).

    Good to know.
I am starting to get interested in the specific hop used in what I like. It is kind cool to see the difference between ingredients.
