Even with its problems I wouldn't buy any other truck! At their worse, they are still more reliable than the competition.(IMHO)

Curious to know, did you drive one? If so what did you think? I'm completely excluding the popularity bias from my discussion. I've never owned a F150 or a Tacoma previous to just buying my Pro, and I heavily researched both, test drove both multiple times and visited multiple dealers for both.

I test drove the 2.7 and the 3.5, 3.5 with the 10 speed auto.

While I certainly have had zero trouble with my Taco, it is super new still, I recognize you had the opposite experience. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Where I live, gas is extremely expensive, premium even more so and after owning 9 cars with a turbo, or multiple turbos I wouldn't go with Fords recommendation of 87 octane. Even doing so, across my test drive on the 2.7 I got about 16mpg, mostly on freeway. Arguably it's possible I could have done better with premium? The 50 extra HP didn't feel like much more in the 3.5 either. On the same route in the Tacoma, I got a tad over 21 mpg. That millage alone I am talking about a 40% increase to fuel costs, at 100 miles a day minimum, that is a lot of money. the 2.7 didn't feel better than the Taco as far as power or driveability.

I'm not saying the turbo is unreliable, I mean how many tens or hundreds of thousands of the same turbos are out there on VW's 1.8t engine? I've had 2 of them actually, and no big issues. But they were always run on 94 E0. And I traded them in after warranty. I'm not making the case the fuel is run into the turbo or anything, but that the way the engines control themselves, adjust timing, etc the higher compression is served best with higher octane.

And if I am going to get into a Premium drinking truck with a huge number of gear changes, I might as well just get a naturally aspirated V8 and get the reliability and maybe even come out cheaper to run.

I'm very confident in the long run the Taco's 3.5L NA V6 will be cheaper to run and maintain, and more reliable than either of Ford's EcoBoost options. That is primarily why I went that way.

I did prefer the interior, the seats etc in the Ford, and if I had a very short commute, I probably would have more heavily considered spending more and going with a Lariat in V8, with a 502A and Sport package. That being said, it is WAY more money than a Taco, so it's not 100% fair to compare them.

You can't look at MSRP to compare costs between Toyota and Ford because if you go to a Ford Dealer you can really whittle them down by thousands off of sticker prices plus incentives. Toyota you're lucky if you get a $500 rebate for being military, let's say, then they whack you with TFS shitty financing so you end up having to refinance that... IF Toyota moves a Tacoma at or below invoice, it is rare while for domestic trucks (Ford, GM, RAM) it is pretty much expected that you're going to get huge discounts off of the list pricing if you have some dealing skills. I may go test drive one today for shits and giggles actually. I would never go with the 2.7, but might consider the 3.5 if I were to move up to the full size. The V8 does appear to do better in daily driving but the torque and towing capabilities of the 3.5L I think give it just a lot more marketable potential for a meager price increase.

On the price issue, currently the Ford rebates are in the range of $8000-$13,000 locally so that was factored in. The financing rates are comparable here, in that the F150 is 4.XX through Ford or a bank rate might be a little better. Toyota is about the same for most terms, but moving to a bank rate is what I did so would have been the same for either. So I got to comparing a Lariat Sport 502A with 2.7 to the Pro. Moving up to the 3.5 in the F150 would add a few thousand dollars to the price. But in the low $50s here, so whats another $3000 when looking at $55kish.

I did lots of research on Fuelly as well but there are so many geographic variables, traffic etc I thought it best to go with my own numbers on a test drive, more to create a differential than get actual claimed numbers. Interesting point, there are more Tacos on Fuelly than F150s, though there are WAY more F150s out there so I wonder if the population on Fuelly is self-selected or they are more economy minded. Regardless the difference between them on Fuelly was smaller than I experienced in my test drive, but regardless that doesn't consider fuel costs for regular vs premium. So I knew I would end up at a significant difference.

From the way I understand it, the way the ECU works, it detects a refuel and checks through mapping options to determine where it should be timing wise, by advancing till pre-detonation occurs then retarding. I think Ford sets a minimum of 87 to help sales, not because that is what is best for the engine. I'm pretty sure most people in the turbo world would agree that the higher the compression, the higher the octane.

Thanks for the info on the Ford bashing, I was not aware as so far I've seen ironically more Toyota bashing.

 

Pardon my ignorance, but if people on here hate Tacoma's so much and love Fords, then why do those people on here own Tacoma's? Why aren't they on a Ford forum and owning a Ford?

 

I think a lot of folks have been frustrated with the new Tacoma generation. Expectations vs. Reality and of course the competition is always worth discussion. As consumers we have options.

 

Let's hope they engineer out the defects as I think it's the best looking mid size truck. But vastly under-powered.
