So the other day i go to fill up my tank, and the gas door hits the truck bed when i open it. On the left side where it pivots in toward the body, it rubs on the bed. no one's hit me that i can tell, no new dents or scratches, so i am just dumbfounded at how this happened.

Has this happened to anyone else? maybe i got hit by something that didn't leave a mark...

You need to lube the hinge of the gas cap door. Same thing happened to me. Lube it up and it will be able to fully articulate. If you search the forum you will see others with the same issue and fix.

I could be reading the post wrong, but this seems more like a hinge/door alignment issue and less of a lubrication issue. Hard to believe that lubrication will change the deflection of the door on the hinge, but I guess it's possible.

Did this just start up recently? Or you just noticed it recently?

unrelated but i bought my '12 last year. within a month one of the hinges on the door broke. it would only take a quick weld to fix it; just havent yet.

    lubrication >before it happens

the leverage of the door on a stuck hinge is plenty to make it bend next time you gas up

Mine does the same. I read a post about a year ago from someone with the same problem. Mine hadn't done it yet, so I thought "make a mental note to lube the hinge." I totally spaced it. One day this winter I went to fill up and heard the telltale creaking noise of the fill door rubbing on the fender. I looked and, sure enough, the hinge was rusted and bent just enough to rub. Now I have to force it closed, and it pops open when I off road.

Yes, needs lubed multiple times a year. Just like all the other mechanical hinges on the truck.

Look at the hinge where the sheet metal wraps around the stationary rod. Since they probably salt the roads where you are, there's a good chance some of the sheet metal part is rusted away where it wraps around. If so, the best fix is to buy a new OEM gas door and have it painted by a body shop. Surprisingly enough, the gas door is actually pretty cheap.

    yep..
When I bought my truck over the winter, I found the gas door pretty much seized, the hinge was so rusty and dry. It also rubs in a small spot against the body on the left side. I just put a dab of grease there, then lubed the hinge thoroughly. Smooth now. I only fill up once every 2 weeks so its not much of a concern.

If I get bored one day I might bend the door so it doesnt rub.
