I got 4wd for the manual transmission honestly and for having it in case I need it. I live in CA too.

If you are concerned about big bear/mammoth, I mean honestly people go there in camry's and civics. You don't really NEED 4wd there, chains will do and I think in CA they require chains anyways on 4wd right?

Also, if you are going solo and you absolutely need 4wd to continue, you are heading into some dangerous territory/risk of getting stuck. If i was alone and needed 4wd to get out of a situation, that would probably be my sign to turn around. Are you looking to push past that kind of stuff? On the other hand, if you are on a trail and testing the capability of your rig, you'll most likely be with other people which means even with 2wd you'll have someone else to pull you out. Also consider how much you would really do to your daily driver, $30k+ vehicle.

If you need a truck in CA, 2wd will do. If you want a dedicated trail rig, you can get a decent older 4WD 4runner, jeep, ranger, for cheap that you can beat to shit and not feel bad about. Thats what I would do in your situation honestly. You could get a whole new rig for the amount you'd lose on trading in (after value loss and the double tax/registration hit).

First, I'm new to the Tacoma thing. My first taco is an "upgrade" from my Subaru that I passed along to the wife.
Second, I live in Michigan. I haven't driven mine in the winter up here yet, but many people I talk to with trucks (of any type and especially with traction control) only have their 4wd on a handful of times a winter. Its awesome, but not that necessary.

That being said, at the risk of sounding ignorant, I didn't even know they sold TRD OR's with a 2wd option - It seems bananas to me. Maybe because i live in Michigan, but I can't even imagine buying a Taco or truck of any kind without 4wd. It seems to defeat the purpose. As some people have said, you'd rather have it and not use it, than not have it and need it.

I did some light off roading this past weekend to test my truck out a little bit. I had it in 2wd the whole time and did awesome, but the trails were dry and I didn't get too crazy because I was solo. It's nice to know you've got a little something extra with the 4wd if you need it.

 

Learn from your mistake and trade it. I've never met anyone who bought a 4X4 and regretted it. Never met anyone driving a 4X2 that didn't at some point wish he had bought a 4X4. I've owned 4X4 trucks and SUV's since the mid 1970's. I decided to cheap out and bought a 4X2 truck in 1983 and hated it within weeks. Kept it 2 years, traded for a 4X4 in 1985 and haven't looked back.

A 4X4 will cost you $2000ish more initially, but will always bring that much more at trade in time. Over a lifetime of driving 4X4 trucks you'll spend very little more than the guy who spends a lifetime driving 4X2 trucks.

When I was a teenager and in my early 20's I used to play off road. I now use 4X4 in order to get into places where I really need to go. Even though it isn't needed on a daily basis, it is well worth the extra expense.

I'm in the same place... I bought a 4x2 because I didn't think I really needed it... but I have been camping twice, once it was pouring rain and i got stuck that morning. Got unstuck by that afternoon when the mud dried up enough. I still haven't decided on if I "need" a 4x4 or just live with 2wd...

 

No extra weight, less shit to break, more room for increased travel without dealing with a front driveline geometry.

 

I traded in my 2016 sr5 dcsb with 19k miles for a new 2017 4x4 dcsb, also sr5...

No money down, payment went up 39 bucks a month.

I'm more and more happy with my decision everyday! .... Only problem, i had white and now have black... Way harder to keep clean and i swear it has the softest clear coat i ever seen... It gets clear coat scratches by looking at it!

But i have yet to get stuck with the new truck... Got stuck in the 2 wheel drive truck a few times.

 

Dealers love when you come in and tell them how much you want to pay per month....

I was at the dealer getting a new tire... Free.. I have road hazard... They approached me about trading... I told them the only way id trade is if i was getting a 4x4 This time...

He ran the numbers and said my payments would go up 68 bucks a month... I said no... I'm not doing 70, 60, 50 or even $40 more per month... I'm happy to keep my truck, never had any major issues and i love it... He said ok he'll see what he can do... 20 minutes later he came back saying what about $39 more...

I said ok, but i want GAP and deluxe tire warranty too and if the price comes up 1 dollar I'm not interested...

20 minutes later all paperwork was done and i was happy!! Easiest buying experience yet for me...


I'm on my 4th third gen truck... I obviously really enjoy the truck or I'd pick something else... 39 more per month for 4x4 is worth it 4 me...

Those pictures above were taken just a few miles from my house, all back roads to get there... I live and play in the woods... Rains a lot here hunting camp roads flood and get muddy...

For me... WORTH EVERY EXTRA PENNY

 

So my brother was in the same situation as you.. he had bought a brand new 4x2 2016 TRD Sport Tacoma with the sun roof and Audo and tech package. I believe he bought it for $39,xxx or something out the door. He drove it around for 5 months decided he wanted to trade the truck in for a 2017 4x4 off-road. He traded the 2016 truck in for I believe $34k the truck had I think 4,500 miles. He ended up getting a 2017 4x4 OR with the sunroof and audio and tech package. He paid $41,xxx out the door. They rolled the $5k of negative balance into the payments of his new truck. Now he pays $670 a month for his new truck. He went back and forth as well on what to do... in the end FOR HIM it was better to just take a 5k loss and be in a truck he can actually enjoy the way he wants. It's not for everyone to do this but think about it.. sure you might take a couple grand loss but atleast you'll be paying for something that you really love. Rather than making payments on something you don't really want in the end. But that's it you can financially swing it. Just my 2 cents

Yeah that's probably why... you still got a good deal but the sun roof and tech and audio package adds a few grand.

Yeah I paid about 38k OTD. For mine I have a 17 4x4 OR with the tech and audio package. They put in the 100k warranty and the Maintenance package for free I got a good deal on mine. My brother got raped a little bit on the price for his. Where are you located
