Has anyone had any issues with their rearview mirrors taking out a chunk of glass from their windshields? This happened to a friends truck on Maui as she was just adjusting her mirror after someone else had driven the truck and the dealer that repaired it said it is common.

Not correct. Not uncommon, but also not common.

Not in my Tacoma but happened in an S-10 I had about 15 years ago. I just remounted it slightly off center, never had any other problem.

Thats the first time I have ever seen the glass get ripped off like that. My friend was a little freaked out also! She keeps telling me more and more issues going on with her truck (AC, suspension, glass), but even with all the issues, she said she would definitely buy another Tacoma!

IMG_0155.jpg I just noticed this in my windshield. It looks like an impact but it is not on the outside. I'm wondering if there is an issue with their tempering process? Not really sure. But I will be taking to get looked at as is wasn't there before and there is no visible mark on the outer glass and it is behind the headliner.

Is why I have a $100 glass deductible, If my windshield lost a chunk by adjusting the mirror I don't think I'd trust it to withstand an impact.

Gotta be one or the other. If it is not common, that's the definition of uncommon. Perhaps you meant not unheard of, or relatively uncommon.

Is this person 8' tall? I've never seen an adjustment that great, or maybe 4' tall? :notsure: What would be the issue?

Really? How did that happen? Not being a dink, but I get no where near hitting that.

It happened to a 2008 Subie Forester I had. It happened after the windshield had been replaced by a reputable glass company. I reglued it to the w/s, broken piece and all.

    Yeah I'm curious too.

Like the act of adjusting it, it just fell out?

Cause that's some sketchy stuff right there.

The closest thing I can think of is air or some sort of installation defect. I came out to my car after work (hot day) jumped in the truck and went to adjust my mirror, as soon as I put leverage on it, it popped. Initially the mirror didn't come all the way off but while Toyota sourced a windshield it worked its way lose and I eventually had to tape it to the windshield.

This is what it looked like -

Weird. Did it droop so that you had to adjust it? Or do you adjust it regularly?

Mine is set and forget but my wife drives the truck too so she adjust it and I have to adjust it back.

Think the heat had a play in it?

I do think heat had some sort of role. It was a 90+ day. The mirror was solid. Truck was still new so I was doing the seat position/mirror dance from time to time.

    Interesting.

Maybe the glue on the back side of the mirror somehow created a hot spot on the glass?

Hopefully that was the first and last time you had to deal with that.

my friend is about 4'10" and her other half a tad taller so all she did was move her mirror to adjust and bam, if came off with the chunk of glass. It was a hot day, but still, that shouldn't matter.
