I recently purchased a 2017 Tacoma TRD 4x4 sport. I already have step rails, and a new exhaust, what is the next step I should take to add offroad performance to my truck? I was thinking of getting a winch, however I don't think that would fit into my budget (~$2000 usd)

Here's a picture of her from the other day. (sorry for bad image quality)

Yeah tires are a good idea. I'm new to car modding, so when I buy new AT tires, do I have to get new wheels, or will the fit my current ones?

The issue with offroading around here is thick clay mud, is there a specific type of mud tire I should be looking for? Also, what brands are good for price to performance?

If you're going to be going through thick clay mud a lot, a mud terrain will be your best option. An AT would just get packed full and become a slick. MTs aren't for the faint of heart though because they're heavy, ride rough and hurt MPGs (and noisy as hell). That being said the Cooper St Maxx are a mix between an AT and a MT and are exceptionally quiet.

    From my understanding the MK2
From BF Goodwrench is a great tire.

How did the stock tires do!!?
