I am almost ready to pull the trigger on a new one. I heard these new trannies are sealed. That's the dumbest thing ever. if these things are coming from the factory with low tranny fluid how the hell do they check it and add more??? This is making me think twice about a new Tacoma. How widespread is this mess?

i looked at 2 models on the lot. One has a recall and the other not, but thats on the rear differential leaks issue. Funny, they told me they inspected the one that was recalled and its "dry" , well no shit, its still new !!!!

Have you googled what manufacturers have sealed transmissions ? This has been done by many manufacturers for years now. Nothing new and specific to Toyota.

    No 1 selling F 150 neither

A lot of transmissions are sealed, even on tractors. I guess we're moving from manually checking fluid levels to having sensors do it. I love my Tacoma so far, but I do understand people's concern. In its class, I don't think there is anything better out there. The F150 keeps being brought up here but I don't consider that to be in the same class.

90% of new vehicles have a sealed transmission now. There have been a few a 17's here that people claim to have had low fluid. If you haven't bought the truck yet and are worried simply tell them to manually check the fluid level as part of you buying it and you want a service record of it. That way later down the road you have it in writing if they find it low with a problem.

It's really not a big issue. People are making it into a bigger issue than it is. Sure they should be filled properly from the factory, but I don't think there has been 1 report of a blown or bad tranny. Several people's have been pretty low 1-1.5 quarts and they have reason for some concern. I'll also wondering if people are overfilling them or not following the testing procedure. The transmission isn't suppose to be filled to the drain hole. The fluid expands when it gets hot. It's best to let the dealer do it, that way if it's done incorrectly they can't blame you for it.

How many threads are you going to start with the same question?

Should I buy this? Should I sell that? What are the issues with the Tacoma? Who hates their Tacoma, who likes it? Yada yada.

Should we hold your hand while you cross the street too?

    To answer OP question,

I'm not sure if the 17s are coming with low transmission fluid, it wouldn't hurt to have the dealership check especially if you are getting the tow package. Seems to be more common with trucks with the tow package. I don't think its too widespread because I haven't heard of anyone having catastrophic failures from it. Certainly isn't something that should deter you from buying a Tacoma.
