Beastly Light Mount Project

This has been my project for the last couple of weeks in shop class. I made it out of 1in square tube, and 3/16in sheet metal. It is strong as hell. I also go it to hold the horns because I mounted them on the vertical support and they filled with mud and are finally working right again. I have to say I am pretty proud of my welds. When I finally got the welder working right they started to look pretty clean.


Here it is finished. It just bolts up to holes already in the supports.

 

not to bash on your welds to hard but kinda puddied on there arent they. but the way it came out very nice man props to you

Wish I had that much vehicle when I was 17!!. Nice job on the mounts, once you really get in stride with those welds, I see a group buy coming

 

The welds you can see in the pics suck I know. That was when the welder was acting up and would only feed wire an inch at a time. I just wanted to get it done. The welds on the back and bottom look much better since I went to get the other MIG.

 

thought it looked like mig. im pretty good at both stick and mig. might try to make my own but kinda gotta find something a little diff cuz i got the tranny cooler

 

Well the stupid state is doing away with shop. For some resaon they think that it would be better to do an engineering based class. My opinion is not everyone can afford college and a profession in a trade is a good way to pay the bills. Glad to be a Senior though.

It is nice to have a Taco but it only came with lots of hard work. With a little practice I would love to make some for a GB and get some money.

Yep I still need some practice, but for only a couple of hours playing with the welder my shop teacher was even impressd with the weld quality (Of the good ones). If you ever make one take the time and measure each piece. There is a couple of holes that are a little off, but all the bolts fit.

 

Good work man, way better than I can do that's for sure! And the whole set up looks awesome!

It isn't that hard. Just need someone who know what they are doing to show you the basics. And then some time to practice.

yah, welding is kinda like golf. it's all about consistency. it really helps to know the concepts behind proper technique, and then after that you just have to be consistent at it.

 

Looks good to me. Not to hijack, but does having your lights in front of the radiator affect cooling?

And don't give up on college because its expensive. Plenty of people want to give you $$, you just have to look hard. Of course, I am still paying for my degree 13 years later (don't recommend that route)

Oh I know the value of college. I don't think it will effect cooling at all. I figure the lights don't block much more than the stock grille.

 

looks great dude!!! i really need to fab something up, my lights are shaking more than me when i get in my truck..never know when that accelerator is going to get stuck

Oh, very nice project BTW. Looks like a very solid mounting bracket.

 

There is a perfect bolt hole you can use for those horns behind and above the passenger side fog light.

I've been in engineering since 1976, and I can tell you that EVERY engineer should take shop classes. There are way too many engineers and would-be engineers out there that don't have a clue how things work in the real world because they've never built anything in their whole life. Not even a trailer hitch or a fence or a dog house. Not even a frikkin' BIRD house fer cryin' out loud.

I took some shop and welding in high school and machine shop classes in college. I guarantee that your welding will improve with practice. Mine really did once I bought my own welding equipment.

I also had one other advantage over a lot of engineers out there today: I had a dad that did things--not just bought things.

When I was six he bought a used bicycle for my mom and proceded to tear it all apart and rebuild it. He took me out in the garage, gave me a handful of ball bearings a and a little pan of gasoline and said, "Here, clean these."

That little step lead to a life-long interest in fixing and building and designing things which has been a great joy to me.

Dad was also a 4-wheeler. He's been gone for 8 years now, but I still have his old rig (and I spent a lot of time under this one in years past. )

I can't understand it. My shop teacher tells me that they do this in cycles. He says they will cancel shop then in a few years they will find out they made a mistake. So it will be back. BTW he has been teaching for 35 years and says this is the 3rd time they are doing this.

I tried mounting them down low and they just filled up with mud and after about 6 months they are starting to work again. So I mounted them there , it works for me and they are much higher.
