I would agree with you, since you are planning to go high clearance anyways..some dents/scratches on your current bumper won't bother you. A front bumper provides more use, in that you can have a winch, better recovery points, lights, etc..a rear really provides good protection but if you don't care about your current bumper, I say front bumper is the better first choice.
