3rd Gen overheat

My '16 is over 11K miles. No issues. Bad thermostat? Low on coolant?

 

I can stop the blade by hand (I wouldn't recommend trying this!), so the drag is next to nothing.

Think about that figure though....30% of power under what condition? Full throttle, part throttle, idle? At any given point your output is changing, and that 30% could mean anywhere from say...20hp to 278hp....so a parasitic loss of 6 to 80hp just while idling? No way...even a 9000 CFM industrial barrel fan only needs 1/4 hp motor to power it.

I'm not sure where you heard that figure but to speak bluntly, it's absurd.

 

Is this normal? Truck only has 350 miles this is 5 min of driving.

Both! But mostly the temperature gauge reading..

Mid temp reading is good. If you start watching it climb to red blast heater and get her to dealer. If in red shut down to avoid blowing head gasket.

piling on here... what would you say is the max the engine coolant temp should reach? My engine and tranny temp are remaining in the range I'd consider acceptable but I am concerned about the engine coolant temp.

the field service manual for the 3rd gens indicates 195 degrees max temp, however mine is regularly jumping up as high as 210+ if not moving at highway speeds. Something to be concerned about or would you consider this safe / normal?

 

sorry, but dumb question here. How are you seeing the actual temp reading? Is it in the digital info menus somewhere and just needs to be turned on? I thought we only had the analog temp gauge under the tach?

 

Apologies, should have clarified. I'm reading the exact temps via an OBDII scan tool (Carista in my case) connected to my iPhone via the OBD Fusion app.

What was the ambient air temp was like when that was showing?
And what was your vehicle speed?

 

Its pretty weird that I posted this thread a while back and someone just added to it today while I was at a 2nd dealership for the same issue. The first dealership I went to back in March couldnt find anything, so the next time I saw it happen I got a few videos of it. When i went today to the 2nd dealership, they found nothing again, so I showed the tech the video and he brought the truck back into the bay. I went back there a few times to answer his questions, he found no TSB, thought it may have been the temp sensor since it was dirty. I think he ended up calling Toyota tech support and they figured out that it was the fan clutch. This makes sense seeing as I would sit idle somewhere and the AC would not stay cool, even if the truck wasnt heating up at the time. They gave me a rental and said the part will be in tomorrow. Im posting a pic of the gauge slowing moving to the right. Like @JayRolla said, if you see it going past the halfway point, blast the heat and get it to the dealership.

 

Good questions. Temp predictably increases in slow-moving stop/go traffic 30-0 MPH. Ambient air temp was reading about 75 degrees this morning, intake air was running about 25-40 degrees hotter, and it generally cooled down to just below the max (195) once I got moving at a faster pace to get some airflow on the radiator. But even in mild weather this AM, I guess it concerns me if there is any issue at play there and I find myself sitting in stopped traffic with the A/C running on a 100 degree humid day as the summer likely has in store....

 

Per 3rd gen tacoma Factory service manual

Coolant thermostat opens 187-194°F
Normal coolant temperature 167 to 212°F
Max coolant temp is 284°F

My scangauge shows engine temp between 195-205f regardless of ambient temp or how hard the engines working.
