EDIT: Just a thought here but one should always consider 'everything and rule out nothing' when it comes to situations such as this. Here's my $0.02, it could be possible that just maybe the last time gas was put in, it could have been a bad batch of gas/fuel and after awhile of driving it the gas tanks internal fuel pump shut down due to the bad gas, sediments, etc. infiltrated the fuel pump and now it either needs to be replaced or cleaned out?
Is your gas tank cover a lock type? (I have one, why?...because I trust no one) If someone doesn't like you (or your husband for that matter) and really wants to fuck up your vehicles engine then there's always the possibility that just maybe someone poured or dropped something in your gas tank to cause the problem?
As previously mentioned, just something to consider.

Good Luck solving this and like everyone else, would like to know exactly what the cause was/is and how it was solved.

not a weird ford thing, there is a plastic fitting in the tank the breaks often and most recommend never going below 1/4 for that reason unless you just replaced the fitting

It was $80.49 just a bit ago. And if you look at the bottom of the thread, you will see it listed at $75.99.

When it just went back down to $55, I ordered right away.

Should have grabbed a screen shot!

I think so. I currently have the Actron CP9125 which just reads codes, and that was $50. For $5 more, the Autel has a better screen, and can read live and freeze data. As @pistonsandpixiedust demonstrated it in her video, I'm sold.

    Yhea, I actually complained.
If it wasn't in the cart I could understand.
But if it's in the cart it shouldn't change price!

    Such BS!

I've seen them do stuff like that on other products , it seems like if people buy them the price automatically goes up .

So I sold you on it?! Haha, sweet. I didn't even think of it as a product tutorial video.... but hey! That's a great idea too... :D

Oh, interesting. What years/models are afflicted with this? That may be the case with our Tacoma, because our fuel gauge is totally off!

YES!!! OH MY GOD. As the first poster had suggested, it was just out of gas, which means that I guess the root cause is a small discrepancy in the fuel level sending unit, and the fact that we've had the truck for not very long (and are just barely learning her quirks).

I have to say... I am a member of a Triumph Forum, a Supra Forum, and a VW forum, and I have never before received feedback like I have on Tacoma World, on this - my first - post on the forum. Never have I had such quick, thoughtful, non-judgmental responses. I am used to a a volcano of sarcasm, repeatedly being insulted, my post having 400 views but not a single reply to the thread, or being told to "just search because this topic has been covered 1 million times" (I mean, I did search this topic pretty heavily before posting).

So to all of you who participated in this discussion and helped me troubleshoot my problem, I am so grateful to everyone!!! Thank you!!

Hmm, I have once let mine get down to 1/8 of a tank and wondered how much reserve was left. I guess I know now to never let it get any lower than that.

What's funny is, now all of the ads on this page are trying to sell me my Autel scan tool *laughs* and actually the small Actron one too, which I actually have also. That was my first one, then like you @Kelzy I upgraded to the Autel.

BTW, the trick with Amazon is to clear all your browsing history and your cookies, and then you will get that original lower price back.

I have to say, some of the reason that you were so well received is because of your thorough explanation of the symptoms, what you had already tried, and your intelligent feedback through out the discussion. What really bothers me is when some %$#^%@#&& joins the forum, comes on and posts, "My truck won't start. What could it be? Then if they don't get an answer in 20 minutes, they log out, never to return.

This is a great thought, so I felt compelled to respond, even though this wasn't it..... YES. I have seen this happen. I actually work at an Automotive Research Facility, and we test different additive packages in fuels and lubricants. The things that I have witnessed, tested for, and learned at this job are amazing. My work is super top-secret, so (though I wish I could) I can't tell you the latest lubricant additive package and how it faired, or which gasoline company I would recommend, or how many stations have dirtied fuel, but I can tell you that I am very careful with my cars, as is my husband based on the testing that I have been lucky enough to partake in.

When we bought the truck, the place selling it offered to fill the tank, but they only had a fleet card with one station on it, and so I actually declined the free gas, much to my husband's surprise!

What I can say is though, the rumors that you've heard about the stations that are good and that suck..... are probably true! Just use your brain. And the fuel injector cleaners (quite a bit of them) that are offered for sale in your local auto parts store actually do work. And no, just because your engine and your gas are more "sophisticated" now than 20 years ago does not mean you should buy cheap gas, or you shouldn't use a fuel additive (that you carefully research!) every now and then.

Valve deposits are a real thing!

I'm glad it turned out to be something simple. And don't feel bad about it being something so silly as running out of gas, cos many of us have done it too- I can vouch for this, because I ran out of gas no fewer than a dozen times before I finally went in the tank and cleaned my float arm up. :D
    Oh, and welcome to TW!

Sooooo 'top tier gas' isn't just a gimmick? I always fill up at top tier stations despite some who say it's just a marketing ploy, I like to err on the side of caution.

Glad you got your issue figured out!
