ABS, Brake! & Traction Control lights on

EDIT for final fix information as of 7/9/17:

Tools used:
1.) Laptop with 64bit O/S
2.) Mini-VCI J2534 ODB2 USB Interface for Toyota
3.) Tech Stream software to read ABS Module
4.) Multi-meter
5.) Flat head screw driver (for removing old harness)
6.) Rachet & 12mm socket (for removing old harness)

• Issue: Traction Control , BRAKE! & ABS lights on dash.
• Error code found in ABS Module: C0215 (scanned with TechStream)
• Description: Rear Speed Sensor LH Circuit
• Solution: Replaced the Wire, Skid Control sensor harness (Part # 89516-04060 (no rear diff lock) )

The code above would normally indicate that the wheel speed sensor itself is bad, however if you read through this thread you'll see I still had the same issue (same code) after replacing the RL (driver's side) sensor. This led me to test voltage on the Skid Control Sensor harness itself in which I discovered I was not getting the correct voltage to the wheel speed sensor.

Howdy gang,

From my research so far I believe I have a wheel speed sensor that's lost connection or gone bad. This started yesterday afternoon coming home from my jobsite. Truck still drives fine, brakes are ok, speedo still works but these three (3) lights are on the dash. I found this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/traction-control-abs-parking-brake-light-issue.319479/ which leads me to believe its a wheel speed sensor but wanted to see if the rest of the 2nd gen. community can weigh in and help point me in the right direction.

A quick back story to what I believe led to this issue:
I went to the coast last weekend for Memorial Day in which Monday morning around 2:30 AM a storm rolled in and pushed out over the gulf. It rained for 4 1/2 hours straight so around 6:00 when the rain started to lighten up a bit my wife and I hustled to pack up and get off the beach. Due to the storm pushing out over the Gulf and the tide coming in, it nearly washed out the entire beach and we had 40 miles to cover until we were back on the paved road. Thanks to my Tacoma we got off the beach safely but as you'll see in the video below we drove through a lot of salt water and picked up a lot of seaweed along the way. Upon getting home I cleaned up the truck including the undercarriage. I removed 95% of the seaweed most particularly around the drivetrain, axles etc.

Truck is a:

2011 Dbl Cab 4x4 SR5
V6 Automatic
143,xxx miles.

Should I start with a scan and go from there to determine if and which speed sensor it is? Anything else I should look for? I plan to get under the truck tonight and locate the front wheel speed sensors as I believe if the speedo still works that means the rear sensors are working?

How deep was the water you waded through? The video above looks pretty tame to be honest.

I've gone through patches where the water was half/three quarters the way up the front wheel with no issues. I know the seaweed feeling. Last time had a close call at the beach, had to get pretty deep in the salt water, ended up dragging tons of sea weed on the undercarriage.

I would check for codes to narrow it down.

Maybe your truck isn't a fan of the saxaphone?!?

No more than a foot deep. It was what was in the water that was worse I think than the water itself. Tons of foam, tons of seaweed and debris.

I've been looking for a reason to get a scanner so i'll order one but in the meantime stop by Autozone and see if they can pull any codes for me since its free.

 

Pull the codes.. probably a sensor. But just guessing till you get em.

 

Well bummer. Autozone's tool won't pull codes except from the ecm/ecu. Doesn't scan any other modules. Time to order my scanner tool I've always wanted but never needed. Still going to look under the truck this evening at the speed sensors up front and look at their condition.

 

I crawled under the truck last night to see if by chance I had a severed or clipped wire on the sensors from the trip home last Monday. Everything looked good but I stopped short of disconnecting the sensors on the front to inspect them; didn't see any corrosion or debris around them either. I'll try and get to disconnecting the sensors this afternoon after work but I did order a scanning tool today to get to the bottom of the faults. I'm also gonna check the ABS fuse which is a simple thing to do as well.

Scanning tool arrives Monday. Truck is driving fine and brakes are working as they should. Doing my best not to get in a situation where I'd have to lock the brakes up until then.

Thanks man. I've never had a need for a scanner on this truck until now. My VW uses a completely different scanning tool (VAG-COM) that I can't use with the Tacoma but now I have a NEED to buy one so I did.

 

I had a few lights come on after heavy rains back in February.
The traction / stability control light is on the same circuit as the check engine light.
When I pulled codes it was: minor EVAP leak.
Causes could be the charcoal canister or even the gas cap.
I cleared the codes, checked over everything, tightened the gas cap, and crossed my fingers. It hasn't popped up since.

 

You're referring to the light I had on in this picture, right?
If so, it's as I explained above for my truck. Hasn't come back on after clearance the codes. There were two of them. Both minor EVAP leak.

Basically, what I'm getting at is it might not be your sensor. There are lights on the same circuits. Pull the codes.

 

I didn't get any codes

My "Check engine" light is not on. Its the light below in your picture (Traction Control) and the ABS & Brake! light that illuminate up in the top right corner on the Speedo side of the gauges.

I stopped by Autozone on the way home and their ODB-II scanner didn't pick up any codes.

Something else I'm going to do is simply let the computer on the truck reset by unhooking the negative battery cable after checking fuses. Its worth a shot while I wait for my scanner tool to show up.

Getting the codes will definitely save you time and headaches. All indications per the manual when my light came on were pointing to something wrong with the stability control. After pulling codes that's when I learned that it had nothing to do with the stability control.

So, yeah, you can start by disconnecting the battery to see if it clears. If it comes back codes will be your best friend because of how Toyota has lights on the dash running on the same circuits.

Well no luck. No blown fuses, disconnected the battery for half an hour, reconnected and lights immediately stayed on. Scan tool arrives Monday so I'll go from there.

 

Did you check both the fuse box in the dash & under the hood? I kept getting the trac light, air bag & abs lights on. It first was the ECU fuse(under hood) then the Ign fuse under dash. Also with the Ign fuse blow the AC compressor would not switch on. Hope it helps

 

I did not check the fuses under the dash. I'll check that tomorrow as well as scan the truck since my scanner shows up. My A/C is still blowing cold fwiw.

Scanner arrived at the house. About to shutdown the jobsite for the day and head home. Can't wait to play with it but more importantly get the codes pulled so I can finally get to the bottom of this issue.

Which one did you get? Does it read ABS codes? AIRBAG codes are another good one to be able to read.

 

I purchased an ELM327 WIFI Wireless ODBII scanner along with the ODB Fusion app.

I just finished a scan in which it returned 0 faults so I should have done more research into the scanner before buying. I assume this is not reading the ABS module or any other modules for that matter. ABS, traction control and Brake! lights of course still on even after clearing codes.

On the positive side this wifi scanner is really nice showing real-time data and this past weekend I read the thread that allows you to read transmission temps by adding a PID which I just did. Very handy for doing a transmission fluid change.

I'm going to check fuses under the dash as a last resort before taking it in to a trusted shop I've had work done at in the past that I didn't have time to do myself. They can at least diagnose it and if it's something I can do theyll let me know and Only charge me half an hour labor for the diagnosis.

If anybody else has input I'm all ears and I appreciate the replies so far.

 

If you have an abs light on there will be an abs code stored. Some scanners will not read abs. Abs is a different brain than the ecu. My little pocket scanner will only read and clear codes, but my big snap on solus will read everything and live data and also operate certain parts of the vehicle on command. I'm betting you have a damaged wheel speed sensor. Trick is just finding which one it is. My buddy who has a 2006 Tacoma, his rear abs harness got torn inside the wire conduit and that threw an abs code for rr wheel speed sensor no signal.
