I picked up a Circa from the sale as well. Used it in early spring and again today at a local pond and have enjoyed it so far. It took quite a few casts to get my timing down but once I "felt it", it was easy peasy! What will you line it with? I tried a few lines and have settled on Rio Gold. I also like Rio Gold LT on that rod. It is a fun rod! Enjoy.

Tom Rosenbauer would have fun with this bug party! I listen to his pod cast and he talks alot about knowing the bugs on your water.

I hate my latest G Loomis.

It was replaced under warranty (still cost me $100). The original was a 10 WT that I used for Keys, flats fishing. This new one seems like it should have been labelled an 8 WT, maybe less. There is no way this replacement rod is a 10 wt.

12" mangrove snapper where working the piss out of the rod.

It might make a nice trout stream rod, I dunno.

I too will be using Rio Gold. I have to pick some up at Bass Pro later this week. I also need an extra spool, as I will be using the same reel on my 5wt TFO rod and the Circa. I might try lining the Circa with 5wt line to see how I like the feel.

Never even cast a G Loomis before, most of their rods are too rich for my blood anyway haha. I'm probably not spending over $500 on a rod. I've never even fly fished on the coast before so I don't even have much of an idea of what I need. It would be mostly fishing the surf and sound of the NC outer banks. Bluefish, redfish, seatrout, striper, flounder, croakers, mullet, etc. I'm leaning towards an 8wt, do you think a 10wt is overkill?

I have a 10 wt Echo Bad Ads Glass. Fun rod. But yes over kill indeed, for your needs right now. 8 wt is very versatile rod. I like odd numbers so I got a 7wt and a 9wt, for when the wind is terrible or slinging huge flies to some bull reds

Not that I wouldn't love to hook a tarpon, but NC doesn't have great tarpon fishing and the majority of my coastal fishing will be while on vacation from the shore.

I'll probably go with a 8wt or 9wt. The wind usually hits pretty hard on the NC coast and the surf can be brutal, that was the main reason for a heavier rod.
    https://asheville.craigslist.org/spo/6132609758.html 8wt Orvis Clearwater
    https://asheville.craigslist.org/spo/6142014271.html 10wt Winston Nexus
Saw these two on the local craigslist as an option to save a little money since I just dropped $1100 yesterday on classes. I have a 5wt Clearwater and it feels quite nice for a cheap rod, but I don't know if I want two of them.

I would say 8 wt, its a bit lighter, or save up and get a mid priced rod 9wt ! Like the orvis recon, I have it in 7 and 5 wt. I love my H2 9wt but the recon is a really good rod in 9wt too. Also, check out TFO, everybody says they're good and affordable.

I have an opportunity to do a SW Alaskan Float trip in 2018 (August). Don't think we're targeting huge fish. Will my 6 WT rods/reels be adequate? Or do I need to go shopping?

    Any experience/information is appreciated.

6wt will be fine cuz you'll likely be targeting bows and dolly varden eating eggs and flesh flies
When u snag a monster chinook in the process you can kiss your rig goodbye tho lol
Also the guide should have a spinning rig that he'll want you to use in the deeper runs

You might want to use a 10' rod for that fishery. 9' will do, but 10' is better, if you need an excuse. It is sort of high stick but under indicator drifting and that extra foot helps. I am talking about our rivers, but would be surprised if it is something different in Alaska.
