I installed the TRD cold air intake this morning. My engine has started making a clicking noise. Any ideas as to why this might be?

probably not related. your injectors are likely cleaning. it's in the manual... check it and see if the description matches.

Cold air intake is a waste of money if you are hoping to gain "usable" extra power.
It only makes a louder noise.
Stock air intake system is already efficient enough.

I did not experience the clicking noise but I do know I did not feel a difference in the power until I removed what equates to a restrictor tube in the bottom air box passage coming from the fender. It is tacked in using three of Toyota's famous plastic tac welds. Once I fished that out and reassembled and butt dyno'd I knew I got my money's worth!

The first set of pics is outside the bottom airbox and inside before restrictor tube removal. The next set of pics is after the restrictor tube removal, outside and inside the bottom airbox. I wish I had discovered this before when I had my K&N drop in filter and BEFORE I plucked down $350.00 on the really cool looking turd box... But I still like it!

If hp's could be added to our trucks by a simple air box mod, i wonder why didn't Toyota do it already .
Couldn't they've attracted more potential buyers w. better hp numbers?
Maybe they wanted us to spend more $$$ buying their TRD parts to add to our TRD trucks .

I think the dealership calls it an Obama motor. The EPA does not want you to get great horsepower. They want you driving a volt with solar panels on it, hence the AC360 3.5L. Yeah, it's still gas powered, but the EPA squeeze for more MPG's is reason for the downward trend. It should be interesting to see what happens over the next few years if they can weed out the moles. Otherwise, future tacomas may only have a charging port. Oops. Off topic here, my bad?

Not off-topic. These engines do have various problems that are yet to be found globally. Who knows how long the atkinson cycle stays working, or if the trucks engine get stuck in atkinson cycle only and lose power over time.. I have a feeling that we will be hearing of more recalls down the line since we got the first batch of the 2GR engines. 1st gen and 2nd gen Tacos hav3 their frame recalls going on still.

I will need to look up the 2nd gen frame recall for my son's truck to see if it is affected. As for the 3rd gen, it's a scary thought to think the value of these trucks could go subterranean because of the new engine/transmission combination. Ugh.

Great info, thanks! What was the difference in dyno after? Would love to know the horsepower & torque gain after the removal of that restrictor tube. Does the tube get progressively smaller in diameter as it enters the air box? Maybe it's suppose to accelerate the airflow & have a Venturi affect.

Hmmm.. Toyota engineers wouldn't have put something extra in there if it didn't have any kind of benefit. I'm thinking maybe it was the optimal position the way the air flows in the fender.

Yeah. Accelerate the airflow. Is that like the restrictor plates NASCAR uses to accelerate fuel and air mixture? LOL. At least they have dyno' s. Me? I know my rides well enough to know what works and what doesn't work. Do you fish much?
