Headed back to Asheville tomorrow. Anyone need anything from the western part of the state? Keeping in mind I'll be in a Mini Cooper.

You should be able to fit a swing gate high clearance rear bumper on the roof

General mechanics question: my boat has a mercruiser 4.3 v6, which is just the marine version of the chevy 4.3 v6 they've used for years. About three or four times now since April we've gone to start the boat and nothing happens, still have power because I can operate anything else electrical, up until the other day it's only done it after you shut it down and try to restart within a short time period(1-3min).

After you let it rest a few minutes it would start right up, just like normal. Went down the other day to take it out and it didn't do anything on the first start of the day. Didn't have any tools with me, so I would just try cranking it every little bit hoping it it was the starter that I'd eventually find a good spot, I wasn't able to get it to crank the other day. Went out this morning with tools, turned the key, just to make sure I wasn't trying to troubleshoot something that was working, and it cranked first turn.

So, I'm keeping tools on the boat and going back out this afternoon to see if it'll not crank and allow me to troubleshoot. But, before it cranked for me this morning I had it narrowed down to starter solenoid, starter slave solenoid, of the starter itself. With this problem being so inconsistent, I'm thinking that it is the starter. Just wanted to hear some opinions before I take it off the boat and to the parts store to test it.

In my opinion, it could be any of those three. Temperature, amount of gook in the solenoid(s), starter brushes at the end of their life, starter brushes housing could have gook in them and are preventing the brush to have a good contact.

My alternator stopped working after one too many mud baths. I took it apart and found the brushes stuck in the housings and arc'd material away until the alternator stopped working. Cleaned out the brush housings and brushes and stuffed it all together again. Atleast 15k miles ago.

Starter is a good possibility especially if it is a permenant magnet type, they don't like wet environments (been thru several on ice resurfacing machines )

Boats are also known for ground issues, make good sealed cables from battery to engine block, and battery to main ground source in boat.
Dunno how many times ive seen where you bump the negative cable on battery or block and the machine will start right up

I'm not a mechanic, but I'd agree with @Blkvoodoo and say it sounds like the connection is loose or the ground needs to be played with.

To look at the ends of either of those cables you would say there isn't anything wrong with them.
Closer inspection and you see the tarnished copper leading into the crimped ends.
BIG TIME resistance, took me awhile to figure it out. New starter didn't fix the problem, new relay didn't fix the problem,
the cable with eyelets is what was the problem, even the dirty ground terminal was working well once I replaced the other cable. Was from chassis to starter lug on trans mission. The other is from battery to chassis.
The environment the machine is in wouldn't lend me to think that oxidation or corrosion would be an issue.
    Machine is 11years old

Starting to think you're right with this one. We went out tonight, started up perfectly everytime. Loaded up to head home and as soon as the bow came up engine died. Started right back up and scooted us home just fine. Back on the lift I pulled the battery cover and the nut holding everything on the post was half to three quarters a turn loose. Going back Friday or Saturday to check and clean the rest of my grounds. But it wouldn't surprise me if that was it. Hopefully that was it anyways.
