Top Tier is actually a pretty strict set of regulations and markers that the gasoline has to pass. I believe it was actually started by, or supported by, automotive manufacturers rather than gasoline companies. Some companies purposefully will get their formulation so that they baaaaaaaarely pass the tests, and others will far surpass the standards, but yes: it is actually a thing.

SUCCESS!!! I WAS RIGHT!!! Sometimes it's easy to get so caught up in troubleshooting you forget to check the simplest things.

I know the 94.5 to 2003 F series have this issue. It is the shower head in the tank that breaks so it cant pick up from the bottom

    cheap gas, LOL

so long as there is no water in it, its just gas and you pay for octane rating.

I use what ever is lowest octane in all my vehicles for past 30 years and never had an issue.

only my VMAX gets 89 or it pings on hot days

Fuel additives are mostly snake oil but seafoam has made a difference is a rough running engine that had fuel issues.
tried it in my truck and made it idle better after but didn't increase MPG at all.

Damn, that's good news! It's even sweeter knowing that it was something very easy and basic that solved the problem. Now hopefully all you'll need to do is just get that 'fuel sending unit' and or 'dash fuel gauge' fixed and working correctly.

WOW!........that's good that you actually work at a place that does testing, etc. on fuels and such, excellent!

Yes, I definitely am aware and know all about different fuel grades, bad fuel, contaminants, additives, etc., etc. I also am aware that the shelf life on fuel is short and how smaller gas/fuel refinery companies (yes even big corporations too!) sell and move gas that is bad to other locations to sell for profit $.
I "never" stop and put gas from a small quick stop or mom n pop store.."never" because of bad gas. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people talk about their vehicle having problems right after they had filled up. Bad gas/fuel is the main problem the majority of the time.

    Knottyrope,
How did you know seafoam made a difference since you never had a fuel related issue in 30 years?

Seafoam made my idle better on my 69 140 tractor. Did nothing else performance wise.

Never had a toyota fuel issue in 30
I never had an issue buying gas anywhere. Heard many horror stories about water from leaking tanks.

Hi, I know that it’s been over a year since this happened but I just had what seems to be the exact same thing happen to me last night on my way to work. I was actually suspicious of this. Very excited to get back home and pour some gas in the tank to see. I do wonder though if this has continued to be a problem for you or do you just not allow the fuel to get so low anymore? Any how, I’m glad you figured it out and thanks for sharing!!

Just wanted to bump this thread. The exact same situation happened to me. I was driving about 60 mph and the engine turned off, loss of power steering and all of the dashboard lights came on. Popped the hood to see if anything was abnormally hot and nothing was. Fluid levels looked fine, no leaks, etc. Our mistake was dismissing fuel as the issue since we were under a quarter but the light hadn’t come on yet.

My insurance covered the tow a few miles down the road. Came to this forum, read this thread, and decided to give it a try. Put in 2 gallons and fuel injector cleaner and it started up on the second try and runs fine now. I guess my concern is now the sensor or fuel pump? I don’t know much about vehicles but any recs would be appreciated. I’m not going to let it get under a quarter from now on. I do let it run with the light on quite a bit...guessing that could be the issue.

My 2005 Tacoma Dbl cab v6 died on the way to work this morning. Gauge read almost 3/8 tank. Got fuel into it and started up. Topped off at 22 gallons and she reads full again. I have had truck since 2011 and taken guage down to the bottom line with the low fuel light on before. Usually go just below a quarter tank. Assuming its a float/level sensor issue. Will run some Sea Foam thru it when I get next fill up.
    Any other advice about guage/float?20220819_061650.jpg
