3,000 miles for first and every oil change! But, never go over 5,000 (factory rec.)... Cheap insurance for a healthy engine!

I just had it changed for the first time on my new truck, got in December and now at 3,000 miles. The service manager said I was early for the first, I said I know... we each smiled...

Yep todays oils are light years ahead of the oils used 20 30 years ago . It is a whole new ball game. In fact it is impossible to find a API certified oil that is not a good oil today.

Most of the time is decided by advertisement and personal choice not oil make up .
If you live in a real cold environment syn oil is good for start ups as it is fluid at cold levels slighly moreso than dino oil

if you live where it is always above 45 /f any dino oil will work when changed as recommended by the manufacture .

i figure @ 1500 miles be a good time to drop the factory oil. i mean it is "break in" oil as far as rings and bearings (babet) wearing in so id be more concerned over the filter getting clogged then the metal in the oil. thats what the filter is there for, right? i usually drop factory oil within 2000 miles and start with Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 and OEM filters (too many arguments with dealerships about other brands to warrant the savings)....just wondering what you guys do. i change at 4000 miles or less. Wifes 03 Lancer OZ has 60k on it and the oil looks tan after 4k miles....running Castrol Syntec and OEM filters on her car since 1400 miles. Doesnt use a drop of oil either (knock wood). Im planning the same routine for my Taco.

You guys are confusing the hell out of me.:frusty:

I have 1,300 miles on my new Taco and want to take care of it.
The break in period and regular oil for the first few thousand and then change over to synth... Waahhh!!! :violent:

Does anyone have any scientific data proving what is the best recommendation for a new 4.0 toyota engines? :help:

Waking.....technology in the last 15 years or so has become so precise and better control over building cars. The old ways of building a motor was sand cast forming where the block shape was made in a sand form, molten iron was poured into the mold and the sand was later washed away leaving the block, along with heads, this was the OLD way and people cant get that out of their heads that there "may" be some debris left from the cast forming and that the engine needs to be run for a shorter time at first to get the contaminates out of the system. Now adays they have lost cast forming, using different materials, even a special foam that once the motor is cast, a liquid is poured on the foam to disolve it and washes away leaving nothing behind except a block. Parts tolerances are much higher today leaving less wear on new parts to "break in" or "seat". It still needs some time to seat parts but most of that is handled at the factory. Motors are run outside of the vehicles prior to installing them. the manufacturer, regardless of who, will check temps, oil pressure and all the other neccesary specs to make sure the motor is OK to install. Considering the cab of our trucks are dropped on from above after the motor and driveline is installed, they dont want to have to remove a bad motor. Well, GM left a bad motor in my 06 Canyon (yes im still bitter at GM :) )

I only change my oil earily because:
    1. the quality of the oil in the engine
    2. HOW long its been sitting in the engine (2010 bought in Feb.2010 off dealer lot......)
    3. piece of mind that im starting off fresh with knowing that the oil is highest quality and clean filter
    4. I'm running synthetic from oil change NO.1. Oil is oil (to a degree), just the synthetic will handle higher temps, and give better protection longer then conventional oils.

i've rebuilt motors and have built some really wild Isuzu pickups, and ive learned not to cheap out on the low end oils and filters. i do alot of research and find that the best price isnt always the best deal. Id rather spend alittle more on oil and filter knowing its some of the best stuff i can put in my new investment. spend 15-32k on a Tacoma, you going to cheap out with a cheap oil to save 15.00/change???

the oil in your truck is fine from the factory, run it and just keep an eye on its color and texture. If it starts looking dark, change it but remember the motor is fresh and new, so dont neglect it. i wouldnt go more then 2-3k on the original oil/filter, and no more then 5k on ANY oil change. Also synthetics dont become acidic as fast as conventional oils sitting in the oil pan also. I know alot of people that store classic cars and show trucks over the winter and use synthetics because they sit and regular oils react with metal causing acid build up and the oil deteriorates faster....why they say 3months or 3000 miles, whatever comes first....just my thoughts.

Changing the FF early is a "feel good" move. People do it to make themselves "feel good" about doing something positive about maintenance.

But the truth is that millions and millions of cars/trucks have done just fine by NOT changing the FF early. So it doesn't really seem to matter one way or the other if you do it early or leave it in for the full OCI.

My personal take on this is that since it doesn't hurt anything to change it early, that's what I do. Yes, it makes me feel good :D

Thanks for the info. It helps.
Sounds like If I just change the oil regularly I'll be OK.
Based on lowzones comments I'll spend the extra money and go with full synth.
But I'm still confused about not using synth too soon.
Why does it matter? Or does it?

Keep in mind that many cars are coming from the factory with syn in the sump already. The Corvette is one of them. You really can't put it in "too soon".

Toyota offered me 2 years of free maintanence. oil change every 5000 miles (8000 kms) or 6 months, what ever comes first. Minimum 4 changes in the two years.
My plan is to change at 3000 kms (1900 miles) using dino oil, then again at 5000miles (dealer change with dino oil). Synthetic eventually, but not until the engine is finished the break in. My last new car required 12000kms (7500 miles) before the mileage improved to EPA numbers.
Here, the other reason for synthetic is cold weather starts. Starting an engine at -30C to -40C/F is very hard on it as dino oil does not flow and will not lubricate well.
I only put about 7500 miles on a car per year, as I have two all summer long. The Tacoma is my winter beater.

    Let the engine break in folks! 1st-3300mi, 2nd 6600mi, 3rd 10,000 = with sythetic.

Use regular motor oil for the first couple, then switch to synthetic at 10K. Once you switch, go every 5,000 miles.

Your engine will last longer then the truck, trust me.

There is no truth to this at all. You can switch back and forth between synthetic and conventional oil at will, all the time, for the life of your vehicle.

The only possible problem comes from running conventional oil for a long time--many years--and then switching to synthetic. It can cause oil seepage at seals and gaskets as the synthetic oil dissolves some old deposits that had become part of the seal over time.

+1. They even sell oil that is a mix of synthetic and conventional. It's called synthetic blend.
