J2807 Automotive Towing Standard... Why Doens't Tacoma Meet Requirements?

Based on the number of towing complaints and because we are looking to buy a trailer in the near future, I was looking into what the tow rating on my truck really means.

I started by talking with @smitty99 about it and he directed me here:

Then I looked up the J2807 code and found more articles:

Then I found a thread on here that listed Toyota picking up the system in 2013.

Then an article came up that says the 2016 Toyota Tacoma meets the J2807 requirements, according to Toyota:

So, what's the deal? Transmissions are over heating when going up grades with far lower weights than what is maximum. The heat test of J2807 should not allow that. What is going on here? Why doesn't the truck live up to the standards? This is making me hesitant to buy a 2900 pound dry toy hauler when we live in Socal where there are hills in every direction....

You have 8K+ posts in two years. You have probably read a few threads. You actually trust what you read here? Really? I have only been here a few weeks and this place, IMO, is 90% whiner and 10% reality with a few actual informative posts thrown in for good measure.

You have two choices - Buy a trailer and pull it with your Tacoma (I'll bet 100 internet points you won't have any issues) or go buy a F350 diesel 4WD dually to pull your 3K trailer.

FWIW I have already pulled a 6X12 Uhaul loaded to around 4.6K 300 miles this past weekend. I currently have 2K miles on my Tacoma. No issues and pulled fine. If I would have followed the "wisdom" of this forum I should have broke down and over heated at least 4 times in that 300 miles lol.

 

TFL Truck tested a 2016 Toyota Tacoma pulling a 6100lb trailer up the Ike Gauntlet without any mechanical issues. Your 2900lb will not be a problem.

Toyota was the first manufacturer to use the J2807 standard. It took awhile for Ford,GM,Nissan and RAM to use the standard.

FWIW- I have a 2012 DCSB TRD OR. Only mod at the time was the Firestone RideRite Airbags. This is what I towed from Greenville, South Carolina to Seattle, WA. via I-40, I-15 and I-90. 17 ft (double axle) U-Haul trailer fully loaded with personal belongings from an apartment, cab full of similar stuff. I had my Suzuki DR650 and other motorcycle stuff in the bed. I did this in January '13 and I crossed several mountain passes along the way including Oregon and Washington (frozen at night) where I needed 4x4, chains and white fists. I couldn't have been prouder of my Tacoma and would do it all over again. I don't know much about the Gen3 but I'd guess that it should be able to do the same or better.

With your trailer loaded to 4K pounds your taco will haul it to hell and back, up hills and mountains, with no issues at all. Mine sure does. Just put it in ECT mode and slap the transmission into S5 whenever towing a loaded trailer and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't want to haul a 6K pound trailer with a taco any distance, that would suck, I don't care what the specs say.

 

Personally after towing 1st hand with a 2006 v6 Prerunner, a 2011 v6 TRD Sport 2wd, and finally my 2017 TRD OR 4wd, 4th gear in these transmissions (even without ECT) feels really good. In fact, what I don't like about this transmission happens after 4th gear. 4th pulls my trailers (utility, travel trailer, and a 18' car hauler for about 50 miles...wasn't mine) better than my second gens. I use a ScangaugeII to monitor temps and I pulled my utility trailer for 50 miles (x2) and trans temp was at 186 degrees at the end of the first leg. Kept it in 4th on hills and 5th on flats - I always tow in sport mode. Didn't use ECT.

 

Also, just to add, towing a travel trailer....wind resistance is gonna be the problem. Pick something smaller, more aerodynamic, lower profile. When you get a headwind going up a hill, you'll know why.

 

Just a headwind with no trailer...........geez, more low end torque please.

 

S5?? Shouldn't tow in S5 unless it's the smoothest road known to man. S5 and S6 are overdrive gears, constant shifting in and out of these is terrible for the transmission, on any vehicle.

To the OP, I've towed my 4,122lbs (dry) travel trailer a handful of times with my '17 TRDS without any issues. Longest trip was 109 miles 1 way, averaged 10.4mpg. No giant mountains bug plenty of hills on the hwy. I use ECT and S4 when towing on the highway.

 

I live in the flattest area known to man. I'm aware of towing in S5, and it's mostly in S4. But you're right, if you aren't an experienced tower, or haven't been towing for 20 years like some of us, S4 is the safest, highest gear you should use.

Besides, monitoring engine load you'll see that often S4 and S5 are about equal in MPG, but putting more drivetrain stress and engine load in 5. Anywhere outside of where I live (especially once I hit hills, I just set it in 4 and get after it).

 

My truck slows down going up a hill,temperature rises, sometimes have to turn the manual fan on at about 180.Oil temperature gets hot also...Damn Peterbilt.....EDIT: Have to drop gears also!!

 

I think you mean horse power. We are talking about sustaining speed with trailers. That's horse power
