Why wouldn't Toyota install headers from the factory then? Or why not a more powerful tune? Or bigger exhaust? Or a supercharger? Or anything else that is more efficient than stock?

Because of CARB crap, noise, reliability, cost etc. Toyota has to please everyone at the same time so being conservative is key. If they installed that CAI from the factory grandpa would gripe about the noise, etc.

Emissions is a big reason for certain exhaust and intake setups. Some vehicles, not saying a third gen tacoma really benefit from increased airflow. The ecu will adjust for these changes and it sometimes will increase in minimal mpg and torque gains.

Because very few consumers actually WANT it is why Toyota (and other OEMs) don't offer it. I'm sure they could drop the 4.6 or 5.7 in the Tacoma! Why don't they? Because, as a percentage, nobody wants it and it would be a failed business case. Toyota is about one thing.... making money. People get confused and put "feelings" and "passion" and all those little feel good words when talking about a vehicle. One thing - profit - drives every. single. OEM.

People also get confused because they think what they read here on the forum is somehow translated to the the real world. Sure TW is a good sized forum but does it have 17,000 new 3rd gen owner members a MONTH? That's how many Tacomas were sold lol. Truth is we are a tiny fraction of enthusiasts. What we want (power, noise, off road prowness, etc) is usually NOT what the general public wants.

The last thing people forget is the Tacoma, like most other vehicles, is a lesson in compromise. It does a lot of things pretty good, not any one thing great. For example, I am perfectly happy with the power and torque of the Tacoma, as is probably 95% of all the buyers in the past months. For those 5% who want more? Sorry. Buy a Tundra or enjoy what you have..

Do you really believe their dyno results when they're trying to sell you a product?

I suggest you watch this video.

Read the fine print on their dyno chart.... http://afepower.com/media/catalog/product/files/pdpfiles/7/5/75-76005j1600.1472671841.jpg

    Baseline air temp = 84.93F
Cold air filter air temp = 68.39F

Are they talking ambient temp? I bet the 16F is making those extra ponies more so than the intake. Colder air is denser air (Which is how nitrous oxide and intercoolers work) They should both be seeing similar inlet temps as they are both CAIs..... they're just saying theirs is better. Kind of sneaky, but at least they tell you the truth if you look.

I'll be more apt to believe it when someone else tests it.

my bad bro, I forgot if its online it must be true. I'm sure they're being conservative with those numbers too and its likely closer to 30hp / 40tq.

If you click on packages and scroll down, if you order both the intake/filter and the scoop they knock off $129.00 - so you get the scoop for $6.45. Pretty good deal.

I haven't had any issues with water or moisture at all - it sits up higher than the radiator and when I inspected after driving in wet conditions (road splash/mist from drivers in front) there wasn't any noticeable moisture inside the scoop at the intake.

I'm not going to get in a pissing contest. Nobody is forcing you to buy or even believe. As for me, it was worth it. End of story:lalala:

I definitely believe they got the power at this point. They got it because of the temp drop more than the installation of the CAI.

I'm looking into getting the scoop. Only issue I see is that you have to remove it to add power steering fluid but I don't see that as a big deal.

Did you get the power gains out of the TRD CAI the aFe claims?

I'm gonna go on the record saying I was very surprised the Pro came with the cat-back but not the CAI. Back in my tuner days the CAI and the exhaust were always done at the same time.

You know I'd like to think I did but my truck was fairly new when I installed it and I hadn't really shot it over 4k rpms much. You can HEAR a little difference however only when you're at high rpms. I had the K & N in my '12 taco and could hear a bigger difference(obviously), but I couldn't honestly tell you I feel any "gains" out of it.
I do want that trd cat back though

Maybe I'll do the TRD one if they have a dry filter when I need to change the filter just to make more noise to compete with the cat back which makes noise as well.

See if we can't get a TRD harmony.

the aftermarket intake resulted in a 5hp increase in the video, and that is consistent with other dyno results including this 3rd gen dyno.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPWC_td-j0M

Seems like a CAI is worth it to me.

    Okay so...

    1) Bottom end torque, which is what everyone complains about is reduced in exchange for 5 peak horsepower next to redline.

    2) That is nowhere near the aFe claim of +17 HP / +19 lbs. x ft. Torque

So sure, if you to pay 450 to lose precious bottom end torque for a whopping 5 peak hosepower, be my guest - just don't tell everyone that it makes 17hp/19 lbs x torque like OP did lol.

The bottom end of this engine sucks period. It doesn't come alive until the top end. There really is no way to resolve this weakness in the engine without a compressor. Might as well focus on improving its strengths at the top end.

There is nothing else on the market that can give our cars any type of functional improvement (e.g. improved top end) that is below 1000usd.
