How's the ride quality on Coilovers from Fox or ToyTec?

Howdy all, I was looking for some input on how your ride quality is with either Fox or ToyTec Coilovers. I'm looking to do a 2" lift in a few months and have a few questions people here could probably answer. I don't plan to do heavy duty off-roading although where I live there is plenty of light off-roading. This will be on my daily driver so I'm concerned about ride quality.

1. How is the ride quality (daily drivers please) with FOX or ToyTec coilovers?

2. With a 2" lift, do I have to change out anything else, bushings, control arms....etc?

3. I'm staying with 17" rims & BFG's 265/70/17's while doing this mod, how will my MPG change....or will it?

4. Where would you recommend buying the FOX or ToyTec coilovers?

1. havent ran either, so i cant comment. i have ran the 5100 shock w/ OEM springs though, set at 2.5" as a daily, and the ride was good for the bumping 405 fwy.

2. 2" you wont need to change anything. if your going 2.5+, you will need UCAs to get your alignment correct.

3. if you stay w/ your current tires, you might see a slight drop, but i really wouldnt suspect you would see anything.

also, why only fox or toytec, what about camburg, icon, king, walker evans, etc??

 

If you're going for a coilover, you should consider those other vendors yosh2000 suggested. If money is an issue (and coilovers are expensive), you go with OME or bilstein 5100 setup.

I've had the ToyTec coilovers (with TC UCAs) on my daily driver ('06 4 cyl. 5 spd. 4x4 Acc.) for about 7K. They're set somewhere between 2" and 2.5".

I got the ToyTec Ultimate kit 75% for the suspension upgrade (anything was better than stock) and 25% for cosmetics.

To me, the ride quality is WAY superior to stock. It is decidedly firmer, but in an enjoyable way. I would almost say it has a "sporty" feel. Mind you it is not a night-and-day difference. The character of the truck is not ruined, so don't worry about that. Prior to changing out the suspension, I had lots of body roll and dip in corners and braking, respectively...almost to the point of feeling unsafe. The truck would handle unpredictably with a moderate load in the bed or with a trailer behind me. Now it is very solid feeling.

I have a lighter truck than many of you, so I think the coilovers feel a bit stiffer for me...and cause the truck to really follow the road. With the alignment set perfect, the front wants to dart sometimes if the road's condition sucks (when compared with factory coils and shocks). The other thing I noticed is that it took a few thousand miles to really break everything in. The bushings and the uniballs on the UCAs broke in, and both coils settled a tad.

I got my stuff directly from ToyTec. There are lots of options, but you really can't go wrong if you get these coilovers. I'm happy, and wouldn't go back to stock.

 

I just recently installed Toytec coilovers on my truck.

I had a daystar 2.5" spacer lift on my 06 trd sport and hated it! It rode and handled terrible. When going over just a speed bump it felt like my front suspension had no give at all.

I realized that I reached a point that most people do in that I wished I would have done it right from the beginning.

Anyway, I recently put on Toytec's coilovers and the ride is night and day! They are not harsh at all. I think I probably have them at about 2" over stock, maybe a little less. Overall my truck rides and handles much better than it did with the coil spacers.

I went with Toytec because I didn't want to have shocks that required servicing. I couldn't be happier with my decision.

 

I love my ICONs a lot more than my Toytec. If you want a street queen Toytecs will be fine. If you want to do offroading I would go with one of the companies yosh stated.

^ how is that stupid? he's right on, no use in spending a ton of money on a set of 2.5" coilovers if they wont be used...

 

For the money Toytec charges for the coil over ($800), I would just spend a little more and get ICON ($1000). Way better suspension than toytec.

 

^ or get the light racing coilovers, as they are exactly the same (internal valving and all!) according to icon in the email they sent me yesterday.

I got a set of used light racing coilovers and they ride amazing.

I guess the makers of light racing used to make Donahoe (which is now Icon) coilovers but a business dispute left light racing with a bunch of parts and the machines to make em so they produce them under the name light racing. correct me if i'm wrong, it's been discussed thoroughly over at TTORA.

 

^ icon makes the LR coilovers, LR makes the icon bump shocks...its a give and take relationship!

 

OK that is fair enough. Guess I read it as Toytec coilovers are less capable and meant for mall duty. Not that I'm a Toytec salesman or anything. I've seen people wheel their stock rigs more than I ever will.

 

^ keeping on topic, toy tecs are less capable than a set of 2.5" fox coilovers when your high speed desert running...but for light offroading, a set of 5100s would fit the bill just fine.

 

Totally! I am not a desert racer, rock crawler, or extreme mud enthusiast. I use my lower-end street/mall queen Taco to drive my kid to school, haul stuff, and go to the mountains or sand every once in a while. I got the ToyTec COs after reading a lot of posts here and I chimed in because the OP asked about the daily driver ride quality. As far as suspension upgrades go, it may not be the best $800 to spend compared with other options, but it is not a total waste either. I'm satisfied, anyway.

Now, just to answer a few questions..... No, I could look at other brands but it seems like people tended to post A LOT more about ToyTec and less about FOX yet both those seemed like the better brands. Ford after all did their Raptor using FOX so I expect it to be a good brand. I know price factors in but what seemed missing from my "search function" was ride quality! Between hitting the off-road sections most people have to do A LOT of driving on regular roads and freeways so I thought asking how they hold up would be important. How the daily grind.......grinds your backend while driving on asphalt. I don't mind paying a little bit more for a good quality ride. I am positive most these brands will work great off-road but it's the on-road I have to deal with 87.5% of the time.

^ if i was in your shoes, i would go w/ a set of the 5100s. you can get 4 brand new shocks for less than $300 from sonny at downsouthmotorsports.com. you will be able to get 1.75 or 2.5 of lift from them. i ran these onroad for a few years, great setup! if your set on coilovers, i personally would get some icons, as it seems like they are the most toyota focused out of the coilover bunch (again, IMO).

just b/c ford used the fox's on the raptor, doesnt mean they are the best. also, what kind of offroading? high speed stuff you would greatly benefit from coilovers, if not, again the 5100s fit the bill just fine!
