Glad you got your A/C recharged......I find it hard to believe that it was not charged correctly at the factory, but I guess it can happen. BTW, not that it's any big deal, but the refrigerant in cars is not Freon (technically). Freon is a trade name for R22 specifically, but a lot of people call all refrigerants Freon, but that word is a trademarked name for one particular refrigerant. Whats in our trucks is R134a, and has been since 1995 (by federal law). Just thought I'd throw out that bit of info, and I only know this because I am an A/C technician...

Actually the Tacomas have pretty decent A/C...but then again, you're only conditioning a relatively small space. I wish the car makers were still allowed to use R12 in the a/c systems, as it was a more effective refrigerant than R134a....just too bad that R134a costs about $25.00 per pound (wholesale).......anyway...glad you got it fixed!

Yes, I thought the same thing until I heard several other members over at Nations and TS complaining of the same thing. However, it's happened more than a few times. I'm not sure of the process on the assembly line in Fremont, but I'm sure there's some human intervention that taking place thats generating the problem. IMO...probably less of a problem in Japan than in Fremont.

yeah i think they said there was one of them R sumthings that cooled alot better but wasnt "eco friendly" or w/e so they filled it up with one that was eco friendly

Mine was "hecho en Mexico" and has cooled fine since I bought it new. Unfortunately, auto makers have not been allowed to sell new vehicles with R12 since 1995, so they have had to convert to the newer blended refrigerants. The R12 is not "eco friendly", and is actually ozone destroying, due to the chlorine that is part of it. The same thing goes with home central air conditioning....in about 4-5 years, R22 will become so expensive as it's use will be ending for new equipement. The newer HFC blended refrigerant, R410A has been in use for a number of years, but will eventually replace R22. Anyway, I'll stop, as I guess that nobody else here cares about A/C and refrigerants other than me.....Sorry.:(

I saw FlyMan ask about hearing noises from the A/C. I am hearing squeaking from the dash when I turn on the system or adjust the temp. Anyone else have this? As far as coldness, mine seems okay but not as cold as my other vehicle (Infiniti G35).

BTW, I am a Tacoma newbie. Have had my 2.7L SR5 Access Cab since late March and love it!

Squeaking from the dash? Are you sure it's not coming from under the hood? If your not sure, have someone turn your a/c on and off while you listen near the a/c compressor. The only noise you may hear when turning on the a/c at the panel is the pneumatic valve in the a/c control repositioning the direction of the air flow(exp:floor to defrost to psgr vent..etc) However, if this is the case you may have a slight pneumatic leak because there is no noise whatsoever on mine(unlike the older ones in the past). In fact, I'm not even sure Toyota still uses pneumatics for valve control; regardless, there shouldn't be any type of squeaking when turning the a/c on.

Hey 07TRDsport . About your air conditioning. I like to look around under my truck alot ,and i noticed a leak in my condenser coil on my ac. If you looking directly at the cond. it was on the bottom left where theres a connection. The tacoma comes from the factory with a dye in the refrigerant. So a Leak will look oily and green.Took it to the dealer .They replaced the whole condenser and connector and seal. Also i've noticed my ac works better with the recirculation button on. Hope this helps

Good info...I have the 410A in my home unit. Carrier calls it 'Puron'. It has a higher seer unit and is extremely efficient. However, first time it kicked on, I said: "this can't be right"...sounds like a pipe bomb going off. Called the dealer and was advised this is normal because of the 'high pressure' in the system. I'm not sure if this is why they haven't converted auto's to the 410A, but when the compressor cycles it's definately noticeable..

A/C's haven't ran REAL cold since they switched from R12 to R132 refridgerant back in the mid 90's. Something about R12 damaging the ozone? They still work but they take longer to pull the temp down.

    Flyman767..........

You won't ever see R410A Puron in an automobile....it is not an automotive refrigerant......the saturation properties are different, and operate at completely different pressures....automotive components wouldn't withstand the pressures of Puron on a continued basis. But the R134a and R410a are both blended HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) "ozone friendly" refrigerants. R12 and R22 are both HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) chlorine-containing refrigerants which are damaging to the environment. Ozone is O3 (3 oxygen molecules). When HCFC refrigerants are released, the free chlorine molecules each steal an oxygen molecule, leaving one O2 molecule, and one molecule of chlorine-oxide, which is poisonous. Basically, the newer HCFC refrigerants are a blend of more than one refrigerant, which was needed for whatever reason to avoid the chlorine component of earlier refrigerants. The EPA and other government agencies are creating phase-out dates for production of new equipment using older refrigerants, and also creating phase-out dates for production of these older refrigerants, where after certain dates, the production of these refrigerants will be illegal, but the processing of reclaimed older refrigerants will be allowed. The problem is that the price on these older refrigerants will be going through the roof, as R12 already has...R22 will be following soon enough....

I miss the R12. Thats what i used in my Beamer since it was a 1990 model.
There were times wheni had to crack a window with the AC on to keep from getting frostbite. And from my understanding it's not dangerous to the environment. It can destroy the ozone but it is heavier than air so the only way it could damage the ozone is if someone shot it up there in a rocket. I read about it in the past. The "damning" research came from a rival company and was primarily about some copyright problems and blah blah blah. It was kinda interesting but way to long to type up.

Well i only had collision so my insurance company is doing nothing. My brother is fine. He knows how much the car meant to me so he feels bad and always brings it up. It's about $2000 to $2500 to fix and the car is worth between $1000 and $1500 so im not sure if im gonna have him just pay me some money or try to fix it. I would like to have it fixed but we'll see how that works out. Believe me, if it gets running again, everyone on this site will be the first to know. Thanks for your concern/curriosity 007

What year is it? I would think that any BMW would be worth at least $3K. Maybe that is just cause I have a high opinion of BMWs...

I am glad that you aren't put out too much over it. Of course, you probably have already had a chance to calm down from it. ;)

I had to reply. Im glad I saw this thread, cause I posted one in the tech. section. I just bought an '07 black tacoma about 1 week ago and the A/C is making a distinct clicking noise when I turn it on and off. at first, it was blowing frigid air and now it doesnt seem as cold. I was wondering if this was common - maybe, air pockts, as suggested above.

Its a 1990. The body and interior are in pretty poor condition but everything mechanical works like the day it rolled off the line. The reason i estimate the price so low is due to the general appearance. The motor had between 220k and 250k miles.... not exactly sure cause the odometer quit working. I'm definately upset about it but its just a car, no sense getting an ulcer over it. I typically don't blow up at people i'm close to.... just idiots i dont know that piss me off :) If this one doesn't get fixed i will most definately buy another one in the future....an old one, i hate the new ones.

Not common, but as it's been reported...probably either you leaked some R134A or wasn't filled to the right amount from the factory. Also, when the coolant drops below a predetermined amount or a fault is flagged in the system, the A/C light in the switch will began to flash indicating a problem. Either way, I would take it to the dealer...a good tech should be able to diagnose the problem relatively easy.
