    Friends,

Found a 97 Taco 4x4 3.4L, V6 LX for sale on craigslist, asking $8700. 89,000 on the mileage. Was able to drive it, but not very far or very fast, because it had no tags on it. Very nice guy selling it. I checked the Auto Report and it seems to check out. Had some questions on the mileage section, though, where it looks like perhaps whoever recorded it may have inadvertently added a 1 to the total mileage. If the 1 weren't there, it would match the progression of mileage up to that point.

Too good to be true, or should I jump on it?

    Thank you.

Is the odometer electric? If not, he probably rolled the mileage back to squeeze out more profit.

did you attache the wrong odometer readings? it says 2001 and your post says 1997, also in order for it to be too good to be true, i'd think a price would be a good starting point

D'oh! Sorry. I lost my first post which had all that info in it, then I got too rushed.

    Asking $8700:

I'm a tad confused. It's advertised at 89k on the odometer? Clearly that mileage report shows otherwise, I don't see an inadvertent "1" anywhere. It was clearly progressively climbing...

EDIT: I see the update. Looks inadvertent, as you pointed out. What's the price? Does it owe past due registration? Because that can be steep.

Sorry, Folks. I edited the original post. How can I buy a truck if I can't even post to a forum correctly!?!?

No past due registration. Just straight up $8700 (plus whatever tax, title, and license will be, I suppose)

Thank you. Maybe so on being steep. There seems to be a shortage of 4x4 Tacos selling around here that also have manual transmission and are under 180,000 mileage.

The odometer is not electric; however -seeing it was the same owner between 2012 and 2013, I'd be impressed with 104,000 additional miles. I'm sure it wouldn't be unheard of. It probably means nothing, but the guy was selling it for his father, I've seen the title itself, and everything seems genuine. I could, however, also be a sucker.

Nah. I was referencing the 2001s mileage picture. The 97s is probably just a mishap. If you're okay with paying that price, and everything else seems to be in working order, go for it. If it's a V6 you'll need to do the timing belt/water pump asap.

Hmmmmm I'll try to look for one. There's probably a few videos on YouTube on how to do it. I'll look for a thread though, give me a couple min.

There's a video and a post that shows how to do it here:

So no chance they're (timing belt, water pump) already in decent shape (he told me the clutch had been replaced a few years back)?

@Timmah! said he was going to come out with a complete timing belt video sometime soon too. If the timing belt is original you want to replace it simply due to age.

Its 20 year old rubber that has been under cinstanst stress for 100k miles. Iirc the timing belt is supposed to be changed every 60k. That mileage is going to have a built in safety buffer but I'm guessing it's at max 2x. So its getting close to that, regardless of age.

The upside, the engine is non interference if it fails.
