Wife just got a 17 4Runner and to be honest I'm slightly jealous of her. I love my 15 Tacoma and was on the verge of getting a 4Runner when I picked up my Tacoma. I would say go with the 4Runner.

I traded a '13 4Runner trail w/kdss for my '17 tacoma off road w/6mt. If your kids are getting big, the 4Runner is the better, more comfortable option. I prefer the tacoma. The manual transmission makes it more enjoyable to drive.

Alert, I do not own a 4R, so I guess I am not much help. Simple if you need a truck bed - get a pick-up, If you do not need a truck bed, get a SUV. Pretty simple. For camping, I keep my gear in the bed and have plenty of room for 4 adults

I know. I do too but I drive so much. But I know I will keep the taco. I have so much invested in it that I'd be an idiot to get rid of it. Plus it just looks awesome and will go anywhere.

I went from a 4R to a taco, could not be happier, Having the bed in the taco is all the difference I hated carrying objects in the 4Runner.

Do you have a need to haul dirty things like a deer carcass, engine, yard clippings, brush, etc? If so, get a truck. If not, get the 4 runner.

    Tent or trailer?

What in the world is this?
Skiing? Are you adding a rack? If so, 4Runner. If not, probably Tacoma.

Probably either. For mtn passes, I think I prefer the 4Runner.

I'll agree with a few others here: When we go as a family, it is almost always 4Runner. At 6'5" I fit in it better and really love driving it, but I love my Tacoma somewhat more. Although I've had zero issues personally with either, I do sort of expect the 4Runner to go longer without issues although I also expect to trade it sooner. I love having a truck since I've had one for ~10 years after jeeps. Camping I'd probably take the 4Runner, but we're looking at a trailer so that'll be Tacoma. (Edit: Camping alone would be Taco all day). In terms of "peppy-ness" -hers is quicker off the line with more low end torque feeling, but the Tacoma will hold highway speeds much more easily. Tacoma has more electronic toys, 4Runner has more interior space. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but if you have a family and are moving people primarily, I'd go 4Runner personally.

Wife has a 16 4Runner 4x4 and I have a 15 Tacoma 4x4 I find myself driving the 4Runner a little more than the Tacoma. To be completely honest I've felt no difference between the two. When my wife got her 4Runner she told me she's like me now just without the bed and I realized she basically right. Both haul my 24 ft trailer with ease. Boats no problem either so I can't really say one preformed better than the other. For a family I say the 4Runner way more comfortable. Whichever you choose you won't regret it both badass vehicles!

With the seat folded down you can haul longer items in the 4Runner. Messy stuff like dirt, mulch, etc., Tacoma all the way.

6ft fishing poles easily fit in the 4runner with the back seats down. i have to put them in cross cornered in the tacoma bed to get the tailgate up and locked with the cover on the bed.

Coming from a 4runner owner that now has Tacoma I say get the 4runner. Unless you require a bed for work or something.

The #1 reason being it has more room in the rear and it's closed. The open bed can be a bit useless feeling with everything sliding around and it's exposed to elements.

The 4runner is more nimble on the trail and easier to offroad imo. Also having weight in the rear makes it way better in the snow.

Don't get me wrong. I love my wife's Tacoma. She wants to pay it off and said she will give it to me to build for wheeling and I decided I'm sticking with my 3rd gen 4runner and I'll be getting a new 4runner once hers is paid off.

Also forgot to mention ride quality in a coil sprung rear axle is so much better. Less wheel spin and hop. Way better over bumps when empty.
