We will probably see the recall extend to all trucks buy the summers end. It very well could be bad gaskets and not torque.

That's true, although only GM is positioned to do it right now (with the Colorado and Canyon pair of trucks). Ford has no entry until next year when the Ranger returns and Nissan's Frontier truck is dated and not going to do that. So, Toyota does have the good fortune of timing ...

    I think this is accurate.

I suspect what has happen is Toyota has noticed the problem and only started recalling certain models because

    1. They dont want to publicly say EVERY new taco

    2. They dont even have the parts to fix the ones that are being held right now

Like Baron said, once parts get flowing out and they start fixing trucks im sure the recall will be expanded to the other trucks as well.

I was told "a remedy will be out by end of the month. My dealer didn't know what the repair will be, or the availability of the parts". Not holding my breath.

How long did the dealership take to inspect your rear axle diff leak ? , how come I'm still waiting, it's been 34 days without my truck, just sitting at the lot, I'm starting to think that there might be other repairs issues that the dealership is not telling me about, they only said that my truck was on the recall list and proceeded to take my truck , by the way do we have other recall issues aside from the rear axle leak that I'm not aware of ?

It takes less than 10 minutes to do the basic inspection. Are you sure the dealer didn't inspect it?

My truck has been done. They combined the inspection, and bolt retorquing, with the 6 mo/5K mile service (which included tire rotation) and the entire thing took about 2 hrs. I am guessing the inspection itself was probably very fast (since it was not, visibly, weeping).

Now they're probably holding your truck for the CPS Recall. It is also a major safety concern.

CPS recall? This is different than the weeping differential issue?

My 2016 Sport has been at my Toyota dealership since May 24th. And NOW I see the CPS recall! And I also have them performing the Intermittent Trip Odometer TSB at the same time, better have them replace the crank sensor. At least I have a 2017 Limited as a loaner!

I would be willing to bet it isnt a supply of nuts or gasket shortage issue but a paperwork issue.

Toyota will have to build a repair kit with little bags of nuts, a bagged Gasket, labels and part numbers on everything. Then compile a proper tech instructions sheet and have QC buy off on it and several department managers buy off on it and then get all of this approved stuff in their computer systems and have dealer information packets and training. They will probably have to build sign off and and survey documentations. Then legal will be all over this and until every duck is lined up and stamped off this will be going nowhere.

This is assuming it is only a few quarts of gear oil, 10 interplanetary space nuts and a gasket. There may be new seals and gaskets at each axle end and maybe a redesigned vent if needed. Now with the trucks that have no or low oil issues requiring differential work there will have to be a resolution process to relieve those problems and getting their ducks in order. This is not as simple as just tighten some bolts and shove trucks out the door.

Big companies have big processes and financial responsibilities and documentation that is required to make it all work.
