I failed when i tried it in my 2016. I had done it many times in my 1996 (Yes first gens had problems too).

With that said some on here claim it works with a 3rd gen. I believe there has to be enough battery left to run the ECU.

 

I've push started mine, it was easy get a lil roll going put the key in ACC mode put it in 2nd and let the clutch out

I don't have my truck yet but, I think that you may have misspoken. You would need the key in "Run" to push start the truck.

 

Interesting. I own a VW GTI manual, and I've read that push starting it, while feasible, is going to damage the computer or something.

 

Yea whatever mode it is, the position where all the electronics are on.

 

I figure this would be the best place to share this.

I recently replaced my clutch at 140k with an Aisin OEM replacement. The "old" clutch was operating fine, but there was a rattling or rustling noise when I depressed the clutch pedal. I thought it was a throughout bearing, but considering I have a 4 cylinder, I wasn't quite sure. Even though I didn't want to, the only way to know exactly what the problem was was to replace the clutch. Also, I didn't really like it's feel, so I decided I would replace it with another OEM quality clutch to see if there were any changes.

It turns out a spring had broken off in the clutch disc and was rattling around against the other components. It also turns out that it wasn't an OEM clutch that I was replacing - it was a Centerforce that the previous owner had installed! I think if I had known that it was an aftermarket clutch, I would have expected a different feel and therefore would have understand why it felt like it did. I just wasn't expecting the stiffness and short take up/friction point in a stock clutch.

Anyways, just my random experience replacing my clutch. I would have like to have kept the centerforce in, had I known it was there, but the replacement was also necessary.

But on the OEM clutch, metallic rattling is a factory installed feature (at least on 3rd gens)!

question concerning the clutch start cancel: why? can't imagine a scenario in which I would use this. the best I could come up with would just me being lazy to start my truck. any info would be greatly appreciated.

 

I use it when I get back to the trailhead with muddy boots, or down to the parking lot in ski boots. Get the truck started and warming up before taking off boots and getting in. Pretty handy.

 

One possible scenario is a situation where let's say you're in 4-low, on a trail or in a situation where you don't want to risk rolling back as you start the truck. The truck will start easily enough in 4-low and 1st gear in most cases. Kind of a replacement for having the brakes have some sort of "hill holder" function. My expectation is the one or two times in the lifetime of owning the truck that you need to use that button, you'll thank whatever engineer decided it was worth putting it in, but you could also go the entire life of owning the thing and never use it.

 

It's for when you are in a scenario where your truck is shut off and you can not afford roll backwards while you operate the gas/brake/clutch at the same time when you start it. You press that button while in 4lo and let the starter pull you ahead while cranking and starting the engine.

Ahhhh that makes sense. When I was researching the truck I thought it was funny that the auto had the hill start assist but not in a manual. appreciate the info!

 

Certain Manual Tacoma's also have Hill Start Assist, glad my OR does not.

 

I'm pretty sure that there's a TSB for that.

No, seriously. I was just at the service center on Wednesday grabing some stuff and I asked the guy at the counter if he knew of any issues with the new clutches. He pulled up the TSB and there's one in there about a rattling from the clutch. Fix was a new clutch.

 

Hmmm...im listening. Anyone else know about this TSB?
