A lean mixture will not "feel" more powerful.. and don't forget the computer "tunes" the engine on the fly driving down the road

There are only certain parameters the computer will go to. The term is called fuel trims. -20 through positive 20. If you open up your intake without adding more fuel or if your computer can't add enough fuel you will run into a lean condition. Run a straight cold air intake for 40k miles and your plugs will be ghost white. If your system is running rich let's say you have a restricted air filter it will drop your fuel trims in the negatives over long term. If you have a lean condition your computer will crank the fuel trims more positive to account for the extra air being dumped in. If you have a vacuum leak the computer will max the fuel trim at 20 and if it still detects a lean condition with the o2 sensors then that's when you start getting vacuum leak codes like p0171. Same with rich conditions. Toyota spent millions of dollars designing this engine to maximize its efficiency and have it set up to accept a certain amount of air and a certain amount of fuel. If you go beyond these parameters you are asking for trouble

The thing is you are not cranking in more air. This is not forced induction, not even ram air. The engine will suck in what it needs and the stock box flows enough to cover that

But volumetric efficiencies can be had. All depends upon how efficient the components are before, at baseline.

Think of it as a restriction, versus less restriction.

There are enough before and after dynos in my sig. Some with the same weather conditions. Some the same day.

Look through them. If more people get dynos, more can be added to the thread.

K&N's also do a shitty job of filtering air. They are literally the biggest scam in the auto industry.

really one of the bigger things is a tune. Every company will make their claim, 15 HP, 20 HP, 27.3 HP...whatever. What isn't mentioned is they have done a tune on the engine as well to maximize the benefit of their part. Sure, a CAI may lessen restriction and allow those gains with a tune, but without a tune, you're not getting nearly as much as they claim.

I've looked through them and unless I'm missing something, I see one guy's baserun and it doesn't look like he modded his truck or ever made an "after" dyno run? He just did a base run on a stock truck and everybody is using those numbers as their own "before/stock" numbers?

It is a point of reference. I have done stock base line dynos as well. The point being that after you have have enough people with similar results, you get a baseline for the percentage differences from different locals, as well as a decent idea of the norm of specific improvements.

...but not exactly an "accurate" way to prove real gains, wouldn't you agree? There are soooo many variables to consider. A point of reference I suppose, but not exactly solid proof.

Seent it. Kinda looked like there were some power losses mixed in with the power gains. :notsure:

Scanning back thru this thread, it seems the majority of people find them to be nothing more than noise makers

Volumetric efficiency can be debated sure, but all the air still has to squeeze through the same maf sensor, throttle body, etc..
