That's correct and you also cannot put a heavy duty truck engine into a light duty truck or car (or vice versa - not that anyone would want to). Also have to keep any and all original emissions equipment... at least no restrictions on displacement

The new engine set up is from a 1996. Body is a 1995.

Can't you just unbolt that and install a resistor to trick your ECU into thinking it's still there?

Yes, but then it probably wouldn't pass emissions.

Obviously do it later? How often is smog in CO? Can't be more than here in CA which is every two years?

Every two years. I know that when I go to register it in Colorado (still have AZ plates), I'll need to bring it in and have them inspect the swap to be sure it's kosher. I have some anxiety over it, as it feels like a professor grading a final paper...except this took longer and much more money to do. At least the check engine light went away today (knocks on wood).

I hope so. Even then, I literally moved every single piece of emissions equipment over from the 1996 v6 to my truck. I should be fine (famous last words).

Ok, looks like I'll be running a 4runner ecu then.

    Thanks for replying!

I love NC. We have emmision, but as long as the engine ecu is happy and not throwing codes or too many monitors incomplete, it's a go.

    Probably late august, early September.
I still have some stuff I want to fix before taking it through, mainly, fixing the exhaust leaks.

    Yea emissions tests are stressful.
Mine has one too, only issue I have had is it got plugged up and needed to be cleaned once around 500,000 miles.
So no 7th injector unless you deleted the EGR.

FYI if you got around to supercharging that motor later with a 1997 forward ECU, your emissions levels would be super lower,
My last emission test done by the state was 6 months ago.
The teck guys were pretty surprised about how low the emissions where or how clean the truck was running. Said it was right up there as one of the cleanest tests for the day for a vehicle.
The teck guy said most superchargered engines run very low emissions.
This was new news to me at the time

Because I was interested, I looked into how different the ecu pinning would be, to simply swap ecu's. Answer: I can't, without rewiring the entire truck. Lame!

that does this type work out of house in his garage , he did my engine swap when my old engine blew
a gasket if you get to that point It can be done, the son does the electrical stuff
    like swapping ECU

In theory, all id need to do is go to yoda Jims and get a newer ecu and corresponding harness (interior/engine), tear out the interior, and swap the engine and interior harnesses. Or...I could go the piggyback ecu route.

Hey, OP, what did you do about the fuel filter? The 4cyl has them mounted on the block, and the v6 under the cab.

Swapped the fuel lines for one with an in-line filter. Goes right in.
