Nope, snorkel is right. Head is backwards though, looks like someone broke it's neck. Good way to starve the engine of air at highway speeds.

 

Yup, snorkel head is backwards. Hit an enormous amount of rain coming back home the other day.

It will not starve the motor of air. But thanks for your input

I second Jason at Rock your 4x4 in knoxville. I've known that dude for a good minute. He's helped me with stuff I couldn't get to when it needed done.

 

Is it luck or is it science? I wonder if any wind tunnel experiments have been done to see if a backwards turned head on a snorkel creates a high pressure area or not. Comparing things like AFR, AIT and MAF would certainly tell you something. Got a ultragauge/scan gauge? Find out for yourself ....

I would expect both CFD simulations and physical tunnel testing were used.

The Airflow ram has vanes that create a vortex to fling out debris. Without that, the engine pulls more junk to the filter.

Airflow and Safari differ in their statements a little about rotating the scoop.

One Airflow document says "The air ram should only be turned backward in very heavy weather/dust conditions. In this case, vehicle speed should not exceed 25 km/h or 15 M/h as it may damage the engine".

My Airflow instructions say "Do not turn the air ram away from the direction of travel because it will lessen the positive pressure necessary for proper operation. In extreme situations, at speeds above 15 mph a vacuum may be generated causing irreversible engine damage."

 

That very last sentence is the biggest issue here. Basically a snorkel head turned backwards at high enough speed will create a high pressure point on its face while creating drag on its opening. It's essentially doing the exact same thing the rear of a car is doing. Air turbulence would dictate where that air is moved to at that point, either down the tube or out away from the tube but I bet we can definitively conclude that no where near the same volume of air is entering the motor with the head backwards. At the very least, you will lose power and burn more fuel due to excessive engine heat and an oxygen difficiency.

 

I have a set of mud terrains I need wheels for. Anybody have a set of steel wheels laying around? Or really anything for that matter.

I have a set of oem 17" trd sport wheels that i painted. Can make you a deal. Have set of 1" wheel spacers too. Think there are still pics on my build page.

edit. Also have nearly new set of oem wheel locks.

 

well I ran a piece of foil clothes dryer tubing from my exhaust back to my intake to help force more air into the engine...its practically a Kentucky Turbo. got HUGE gains from it

....because RACETRUCK!
